Evelyne Accad

Born and raised in Beirut, Evelyne Accad is Professor Emerita from the University of Illinois and the Lebanese American University in Comparative Literature, African Studies, Women Studies, French, Middle East Studies, and the Honors Program. Her publications include Veil of shame: the role of women in the contemporary fiction of North Africa and the Arab world; L’Excisée/The Excised; The Wounded Breast: Intimate Journeys through Cancer; Wounding Words: A Woman’s Journal in Tunisia; Sexuality and War: Literary Masks of the Middle East; Des femmes, des hommes et la guerre: Fiction et Realite au Proche-Orient; Montjoie Palestine! or Last Year in Jerusalem. In addition, she has published hundreds of book chapters, articles and  book reviews. Among her awards are the Prix Phénix 2001, France-Liban Award 1994, and International Educators Award. She is cofounder with Dr Jacqueline Hajjar of Beit-el-Hanane, a women’s shelter in Beirut, Lebanon since 2008.
