Ugur Umit Ungor

Uğur Ümit Üngör is a Dutch academic, historian, sociologist, and professor of genocide studies at the NIOD Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies in Amsterdam, specializing in mass violence in the Middle East. He has won several academic awards and held visiting positions in Dublin, Vancouver, Budapest, Toronto, and Los Angeles. Co-author of Syrian Gulag with Jaber Baker, he wrote Paramilitarism: Mass Violence in the Shadow of the State (Oxford University Press, 2020), and Assad’s Militias and Mass Violence in Syria (Cambridge University Press, forthcoming).
