The Markaz Review is an advertisement-free, not-for-profit reader-supported platform that champions a greater understanding of the Middle East and North Africa (“the center of the world”) through our publishing and online cultural activities. Together we raise our voices for social justice and human rights, with the greatest emphasis on freedom of expression.
Frequently asked questions about subscriptions and donations:
What does The Markaz Review cover?
We publish essays, fiction, editorials, poetry, book and art reviews, memoirs, and translations from both emerging and established writers across the region and its diasporas. Our primary language of publication is English, with select pieces available in Arabic and French translations. A dedicated “Bil Arabi” section celebrates writing in Arabic. Our editorial team curates content around critical themes such as “Freedom to Read,” “Love, War, Resistance,” “Forgetting,” “Mother Tongue,” and “Hawar: the Kurdish Issue,” among others.
Can I give a Markaz subscription as a gift?
Yes, for the moment, gifting a membership is only available at the Markazi level. When you choose the Markazi tier, you receive one Advocate membership to gift for free. This means you can share the full access and benefits of an Advocate subscription with someone else at no additional cost, while your own Markazi membership remains active.
How do I access the website after subscribing?
Once your subscription is confirmed, you can access the site immediately. Simply go to themarkaz.org and click “Log In” in the top right corner. Enter the email address and password you used at checkout.
After logging in, you’ll have full access to the content included in your membership level.
Can I access back issues of The Markaz Review?
Yes, and the choice is entirely yours. As a Digital Reader, you’ll enjoy free access to our most recent articles, published within the last 6–7 months. But to unlock the full depth of The Markaz Review, choose a subscription starting at the “Advocate” level. Doing so grants you immediate access to our complete archives—from 2020 to today—featuring essays, fiction, poetry, and cultural commentary from the heart of the Middle East, North Africa, and their global diasporas.
