{"id":625,"date":"2021-07-14T22:03:00","date_gmt":"2021-07-14T22:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/2021\/07\/four-poems-from-mosab-abu-toha\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T13:52:46","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T11:52:46","slug":"four-poems-from-mosab-abu-toha","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/four-poems-from-mosab-abu-toha\/","title":{"rendered":"Four Poems from Mosab Abu Toha"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure><figcaption>\u00a0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4>Mosab Abu Toha<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Memories Are Flowers<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Memories are Flowers\u2014<br \/>\nWe water them,<br \/>\nnarrate them,<br \/>\nturn them into poems<br \/>\ninto plays,<br \/>\ninto stories.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">We decorate them with<br \/>\nlight bulbs,<br \/>\nwith metaphors<br \/>\nof different hues,<br \/>\nin variant clubs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Some memories are nasty.<br \/>\nThey have rank smells,<br \/>\nand coarse, prickly skin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">No matter how deeply<br \/>\ninhumed the bones,<br \/>\nthe worm of sweet memories<br \/>\nshall find their way.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/bombingofgazamay2021-2-photomosababutoha.jpg\" alt=\"bombing of gaza may 2021 - 2 - photo mosab abu toha.jpg\" width=\"1143\" height=\"638\" \/><\/figure>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nUntitled<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">A father wakes up at night, sees<br \/>\nthe random colors on the walls<br \/>\ndrawn by his four year old son.<br \/>\nBut he&#8217;s dead after an airstrike.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The colors are about 4 feet high.<br \/>\nNext year, they would be 5 or 6.<br \/>\nBut the painter is dead and the<br \/>\nmuseum has no new<br \/>\npaintings to show.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/a-poet-and-librarian-catalogs-life-in-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A Poet and Librarian Catalogs Life in Gaza: Mosab Abu Toha<\/a><\/h4>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Rose Shoulders Up<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Don&#8217;t ever be surprised<br \/>\nto see a rose shoulder up<br \/>\namong the ruins of the house:<br \/>\nThis is how we survived.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Memorize Your Dream<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Close your eyes<br \/>\nand<br \/>\nwalk on the ocean.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Dabble your hands<br \/>\nin the water<br \/>\nand<br \/>\ncatch your poem&#8217;s words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Write the words up on<br \/>\nthe clouds.<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t worry, they will find<br \/>\ntheir land.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Open your eyes.<br \/>\nIn the night,<br \/>\nthe sea is no longer blue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Look around and from<br \/>\nthe descending<br \/>\nraindrops<br \/>\npick your punctuation marks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Put on your swimsuit,<br \/>\ndive deep down<br \/>\nand look for a title<br \/>\nfor your epic.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Embark on your<br \/>\nmoving homeland\u2014<br \/>\nyour boat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Go to your bed<br \/>\nand, in your sleep,<br \/>\nbegin to memorize<br \/>\nyour dream.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mosab Abu Toha divides his time between a life in the United States and a life in Gaza.
