Not a child<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">left out, nor a garden,<br \/>\n<\/span>a book, a wish.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By day, we train our eyes to swim in blood<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and not get wet. We train them to miscount<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our missing limbs. At night, we train them<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to light up the sorrow, to ignite a fire<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the timber of waiting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For a year, nothing has happened,<br \/>\n<\/span>And not a single thing has stopped happening\u2014<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Come, death, open your eyes wide:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are the eternal, unconquerable victims,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crying yes in silence, our screams slicing open<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the gown of the sky.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are the victims whose wound is a minaret,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whose blood trails behind them on the path to Calvary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are the victims who, unlike other victims,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do not get to see the killer of our children.<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do not see him in our poems,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do not see him in our streets,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do not see him\u2026<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A plague, you see, can never be seen.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Stillness in September<\/span><\/h4>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amanee Izhaq<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember the stillness in September<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The whisper of a child on a swing<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back and forth<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back and forth<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The North and South are one<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their shouts are eternal<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The burial of a season<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ease is a long lost memory<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cemetery and majlis are one<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gone is the wind of laughter<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The afterlife as cold as the dusk<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What does the dove say to the cage after breaking its bones to escape?<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou could have saved both of our lives\u201d<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now I\u2019ve died and you\u2019re covered in lies<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In blood<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing will wash away the stain<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nothing will remain as it was<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or could have been<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wind remembers it all<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A shawl dances in the breeze<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The children sell sweets in bare feet<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White sheets clothe the trays and the babies<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The long lost daisies of Deir Yassin<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of Jenin<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Please bring back the birds<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their words as empty as the square<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As broken as the air is polluted<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uprooted<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abused and left for dead<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bread is soaked in blood<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The body of Christ<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defiled and on fire<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tired is the lamb<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of man and his insatiable appetite<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of a devastated world gone blind<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tatreez<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>for Siham Abu-Ghazhaleh<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mai Al-Nakib<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She chose threads her son would love:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blues and browns, deep purples, lilac, white.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I stare at this piece of tatreez she made,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">framed and hung on a wall, the open sea not far.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She could scan embroidery like a poem,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tracking in abstract motifs Gaza, Ramallah, Jaffa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her fingers threaded a needle with care,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cross-stitching a story I\u2019ve lost but need.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I see the symbols, there \u2014 house, key, cypress tree \u2014<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">answers to a present no longer hers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I listen for her voice in each pattern and stitch,<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to make sense, beyond the grave, of this broken world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And it sings, the tatreez, to her son and me:<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor a house, a key, a cypress tree we stand, and we
