\nTIME: The present.
\nCHARACTERS:
\n*NOOR \u2014 a 10 year old girl. Sentimental and protective.<\/p>\n

*HADI \u2014 Noor’s younger brother, a boy of 8. Cynical and intelligent.<\/p>\n

*To be played by young adults in their 20s. No need to pretend to be children. Simple choices are best. No accents. Noor does not wear a hijab, although they are Muslim.<\/p>\n

\n

NOOR AND HADI GO TO HOGWARTS<\/strong><\/p>\n

Black. A projection appears on the back wall of the stage:<\/p>\n

A Tweet from seven year-old Syrian girl, Bana Alabad, which reads: \u201cUnder heavy bombardments now. In between life and death. Please keep praying for us. #Aleppo.\u201d<\/p>\n

LIGHTS UP on NOOR, 10, and her brother HADI, 8, surrounded by rubble, in what was once their living room. Vestiges of the room are still in tact here and there \u2014 half a table; a legless chair; a telephone receiver. Both children are covered in dust; HADI\u2019s head is wrapped in bloodied gauze, his vision impaired from the bombing. He wears an old school digital watch. NOOR is in a wheelchair, numb from the waist down. A dust-covered doll with a bandage over her eyes sits beside her.
\nNOOR reads to HADI from an old, miraculously functioning laptop. It is plugged into an old car battery, powered, also miraculously, by solar panels in the partially remaining roof. It really all is miraculous.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

\u201cHarry looked at him, startled; the idea that anything as normal as a wedding could still exist seemed incredible and yet wonderful. \u2018Yeah, we shouldn\u2019t miss that,\u2019 he said finally. In spite of everything, in spite of the dark and twisting path he saw stretching ahead for himself, in spite of the final meeting with Voldemort -\u201d<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Voldemort is a little bit Assad, a little bit ISIS and a little bit Trump, don\u2019t you think?<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Sshh! \u201c…in spite of the final meeting with Voldemort he knew must come, he felt his heart lift at the thought that there was still one last golden day of peace left to enjoy with Ron and Hermione.\u201d The End.<\/p>\n

(NOOR closes the laptop. A brief pause as they take in the ending of the story.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

He\u2019ll never beat him. Voldemort.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be stupid.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

He\u2019s too powerful. Evil always wins.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Spoiler! Harry kills him in the final book!<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Well. That\u2019s not very realistic.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

I wish Dumbledore didn\u2019t die.<\/p>\n

Bana got out. Bana and her family were saved!<\/p>\n

Bana got lucky. She got out because she\u2019s a Twitter celebrity. Only famous people get saved. Psht. Stupid Bana.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

If she was your best friend, she would have taken you with her out of this hellscape!<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

She\u2019s going to America and I am going to meet her there!<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

No one is going to America! Not you, not Bana, not anyone! I hate Bana!<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Shut up! Shut up, Hadi! If it wasn\u2019t for Bana, we wouldn\u2019t have any of these books! These are the very e-books that J.K. Rowling sent to Bana herself! The author of the entire Harry Potter universe personally went out of her way to gift my best friend Bana with one of the most beloved children\u2019s series OF ALL TIME, and then my best friend Bana, re-gifted them to ME! And it is because of this generosity that we have been able to survive the most wretched event of our young lives!<\/p>\n

(she clears her throat)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Wait.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the last book?<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Yeah.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

(NOOR goes back to the screen. She scrolls up a bit.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Well \u2014 it\u2019s just like quotes from poets and dedications and boring stuff. It\u2019s not the story \u2014<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, the torment bred in the race, the grinding scream of death, and the stroke that hits the vein, the hemorrhage none can staunch, the grief, the curse no man can bear. But there is a curse in the house, and not outside it no, not from others but from them, their bloody strife. We sing to you, dark gods beneath the earth. (Pause. NOOR looks at HADI.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

(The computer screen goes black.)<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

(NOOR clicks on the laptop several times.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Yeah, you really are.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Oh come on.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

What?<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Nothing, nothing.<\/p>\n

(NOOR bangs on the laptop. She checks the plug and pulls it out and puts it back in again. She closes the laptop and opens it up several times.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Alright, come on! Let\u2019s go!<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Uh…yeah – ok, just a sec…I just…the book is uh, just taking a minute to load…<\/p>\n

(NOOR rolls herself over to the car battery, into which the computer is plugged. She fidgets with it. Nothing. The computer is out of electricity, and the electricity source is now dead. The following dialogue takes place during this entire sequence.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Yeah, well, that computer is ancient. I can\u2019t believe it survived the blast. Sturdy as fuck.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Hadi!<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

What?<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t curse.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Why not?<\/p>\n

God will punish you.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

(indicating his surroundings)<\/p>\n

Um…<\/p>\n

(NOOR has given up on the laptop and sets it down.)<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

You know what? Let\u2019s read a little later. Prolong it a bit.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Ok.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

You hungry?<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

A little.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

I have pistachios.<\/p>\n

(NOOR wheels herself over to Hadi and gives him a handful. They eat and toss the shells onto the ground.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

I wish I could go to Hogwarts.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

You\u2019re too young. You have to be 11. You\u2019re only 8.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

They would make an exception for me because of my latent genius. Also because they\u2019re short on Syrians and want to show the world how open-minded and not xenophobic they are. You know, \u2018cause of Brexit.<\/p>\n

(NOOR laughs)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

And I would become the member of the Slytherin House \u2014<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

What? Ew!<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

I just think they are generally the more interesting group. They get a bad wrap, but they\u2019re capable of great things. Also, I want to speak Parcel Mouth.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

You want to speak to snakes? That\u2019s creepy.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

I think speaking to snakes would come in handy in these parts. I could stage all kinds of attacks on ISIS \u2014 like order a million pythons to charge at them and suffocate them all to death! And on Assad and all the Russians and everyone! Death by snake!<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be violent, Hadi.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t help it. It\u2019s all I know.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

We have to use our magic for good and only good, habibi.<\/p>\n

(a beat.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Do you think anyone will come for us, Noor?<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Of course they will. Someone will come.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

I\u2019m scared.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Ok, don\u2019t get mad but.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

And people investigated where she lived to make sure she was actually Tweeting from Aleppo. They checked her geocoordinates. Her geocoordinates!<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

I\u2019m just saying. Do you think that\u2019s why?<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Why no one is helping us? Why no one wants us? Because they think we\u2019re not real?<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

They know we\u2019re real. I think they\u2019re just scared.<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Of what? Of us? We\u2019re just kids. We are all mostly kids.<\/p>\n

(HADI\u2019s watch beeps several times. He stops it. He reaches behind his back and pulls out a long, thin item wrapped in newspaper.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Happy Birthday!<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Oh my God! I totally forgot! Wait \u2014 what day is it? Are you sure it\u2019s today?<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Yup! I\u2019ve been keeping track of the days on my watch since the bombing. It beeps every hour. And this is the 48th beep. So, Happy Birthday.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

I forgot all about it…<\/p>\n

(Hadi stands up and hands her the gift.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Open it.<\/p>\n

(NOOR takes and unwraps it. It is a TV antenna, wrapped in copper coil.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

It\u2019s \u2014<\/p>\n

A wand.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

Yep.<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

You\u2019re 11 now. You can officially be admitted to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.<\/p>\n

I wish I could use this to go to America.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll have more luck getting into a fictional school of magic.<\/p>\n

(Hadi puts his hand to his head.)<\/p>\n

(Hadi sits on the ground next to NOOR\u2019s chair and puts his head in her lap. He is fading.)<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

(she picks up the laptop and plugs it in. She taps on the tracking pad several times in a panic. The computer won\u2019t budge.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Ok, habibi, I am \u2014 here we go. Stay with me, Hadi. Stay with me \u2014<\/p>\n

(NOOR taps the tracking pad harder and more urgently as Hadi fades further away.)<\/p>\n

(NOOR looks at the wand. She taps the computer several times with it.)<\/p>\n

(Hadi moans. NOOR whacks the computer hard with the wand.)<\/p>\n

(The computer suddenly flickers back on, the blue light illuminating NOOR\u2019s face.)<\/p>\n

NOOR<\/p>\n

Hadi? Hadi! Don\u2019t leave me…<\/p>\n

(She gently strokes his hair.)<\/p>\n

HADI<\/p>\n

I\u2019m here. Read to me, Noor.<\/p>\n

(She breathes a sigh of relief.)<\/p>\n
