Now a coalition of artists is calling for the Venice Biennale&#8217;s Israeli pavilion to be canceled. In fact, Palestine has never had its own pavilion at the Biennale, since Italy does not recognize it as a nation.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Hadani Ditmars<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The newly formed <a href=\"https:\/\/anga.live\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Art Not Genocide Alliance<\/a> has called on the Venice Biennale to shut down the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.labiennale.org\/en\/architecture\/2023\/israel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Israel pavilion<\/a> in the upcoming biennale scheduled for April 20 through November 24, 2024.<\/p>\n<p>ANGA is a collective of international artists, curators, writers, and cultural workers who remain anonymous to protect themselves from attacks by the pro-Israel lobby. The group initiated the <a href=\"https:\/\/anga.live\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition<\/a> that now has over 22,000 signatures, which include Nan Goldin, Michael Rakowitz and Tariq Ali, as well as 471 past participants in the Venice Biennale.<\/p>\n<p>Their letter begins, \u201c<strong>We, the undersigned, call for the exclusion of Israel from the Venice Biennale. <\/strong>As the art world readies itself to visit the Giardini\u2019s nation-state diorama, we say platforming art representing a state engaged in ongoing atrocities against Palestinians in Gaza is unacceptable. No Genocide Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter cites the recent decision by the International Court of Justice, that \u201cIsrael is plausibly committing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza,\u201d and its issuing of interim measures warning Israel to cease any acts of genocide in Gaza as fodder for the petition.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_32209\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-32209\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.palestinemuseum.us\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-32209\" src=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Mohammed-Alhaj-Immigration-AOC-2021.-Photo-courtesy-of-Palestine-Museum-U.S.jpg\" alt=\"Mohammed Alhaj, Immigration, AOC (2021). That petition has also gathered over 22,000 signatures, calling for the Biennale to reconsider their decision.<\/p>\n<p>Museum founder and executive director Faisal Saleh, a Palestinian from a refugee family expelled from the village of Salameh near Haifa in 1948 begins the petition by writing, \u201cI am personally invested in ensuring that the voices of Palestinians are heard on international platforms. Recently, the Venice Biennale rejected our proposal for a Collateral Event exhibit featuring 23 Palestinian artists (including some from Gaza) and their 25 works of art for the upcoming Biennale Arte 2024. This exhibit titled <em>Foreigners in Their Homeland<\/em> was intended to shed light on life under occupation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Biennale\u2019s decision, he says, \u201cnot only silences these artists but also perpetuates a single narrative about Israel-Palestine relations. The larger issue is that Palestine has never had its own pavilion at the Biennale, since Italy does not recognize it as a nation. As such, it is only allowed to apply to the official collateral section, which consists of exhibitions and events around the city outside the main Biennale compound that must be approved by the board of the Biennale.<\/p>\n<p>The ANGA letter notes that in 2022, \u201cthe Biennale and its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artforum.com\/columns\/cecilia-alemani-talks-with-david-velasco-about-the-59th-venice-biennale-251686\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">curator<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smart-news\/venice-biennale-includes-last-minute-exhibition-of-ukrainian-art-180979939\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">issued numerous public<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.labiennale.org\/en\/news\/la-biennale-di-venezia-ukrainian-pavilion-biennale-arte\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statements in support<\/a> of the Ukrainian people\u2019s right to self-determination, freedom, and humanity. The Biennale\u2019s public condemnation of \u2018the unacceptable military aggression by Russia\u2019 included an avowal to reject \u2018any form of collaboration with those who have carried out or supported such a grievous act of aggression\u2019 and a refusal to \u2018accept the presence at any of its events of official delegations, institutions or persons tied in any capacity to the Russian government.\u2019\u201d It also notes South Africa\u2019s ban from the Biennale from 1968 until the official end of apartheid in 1993. \u201cThe Biennale has been silent about Israel\u2019s atrocities against Palestinians,\u201d the letter states. \u201cWe are appalled by this double standard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ANGA letter criticizes the Israeli\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/venice-biennale-2024-pavilions-2294551\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFertility Pavilion\u201d<\/a>\u00a0billed as a reflection on contemporary motherhood, at a time when \u201cIsrael has murdered more than 12,000 children and destroyed access to reproductive care and medical facilities. As a result, Palestinian women have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/international\/archive\/2023\/12\/giving-birth-gaza-war\/676216\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">C-sections without anaesthetic<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alhaq.org\/advocacy\/22435.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">give birth in the street<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The letter also calls out the Israeli pavilion\u2019s curators\u2019 and artists\u2019 \u201csimplistic statement about the necessity of art in dark times\u201d and pleas for a \u201cpocket for free expression and creation amidst everything that\u2019s happening\u201d as another double standard at a time when Palestinian culture is suppressed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no free expression for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/these-are-the-poets-and-writers-who-have-been-killed-in-gaza\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palestinian poets, artists, and writers murdered, silenced, imprisoned, tortured, and prevented from travelling abroad or internally by Israel<\/a>,\u201d the letter states. \u201cThere is no free expression in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newarab.com\/features\/israel-wipes-gazas-artists-map-cultural-genocide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Palestinian theatres and literary festivals shut down by Israel.<\/a>\u00a0There is no free expression in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/palestinemission.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/The-Third-Preliminary-Report-on-the-cultural-Sectors-Damage-Gaza.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the museums, archives, publications, libraries, universities, schools, and homes of Gaza bombed to rubble by Israel<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the Palestine Museum\u2019s letter ends with a call to \u201cfoster dialogue through art rather than stifling it,\u201d Saleh says that \u201cThe Palestine Museum US acknowledges the call by ANGA to shut down Israel&#8217;s Biennale Pavilion in light of the grave charges of genocide in Gaza. Consequently, La Biennale may not take into consideration any petition or call to exclude the participation of Israel or Iran in the coming 60th International Art Exhibition (April 20-November 20).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Saleh warns that the Biennale\u2019s response to the petitions \u2014 which continue to grow \u2014 calling for a boycott of the Israeli pavilion will result in a \u201ca showdown with thousands of artists around the world hell bent on closing the Israeli pavilion.\u201d In an interview with TMR, he said he \u201cknows for a fact that large scale protests are being organized by Italian youth and labor movements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201c[Italy&#8217;s culture minister Gennaro] Sangiuliano is concerned about what he describes as threats \u2018to freedom of thought and expression,\u2019 but has nothing to say about the slaughter of 30,000 civilians and the destruction of cultural and urban infrastructure in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Emphasizing that the call for a boycott is against a pavilion that is the \u201cofficial representation of the Israeli state, including the military\u201d not a call to \u201cboycott individual Israeli artists,\u201d Saleh cautions that the Israeli government might want to think twice about their decision to participate in the Biennale this year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust think what images people will conjure up as they walk by Israel\u2019s Pavilion: lifeless babies in their pajamas, limbs of whole families sticking out from under the rubble, residential blocks and whole neighborhoods turned into dust, starving people by the thousands roaming the streets looking for water and food for their families. The social media has done a great job showing the results of 5 months of bombing and shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Palestinian Museum US will open their <em>Foreigners in Their Homeland<\/em> exhibition in Venice as an independent project on April 20<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0 and through November, just half a mile from the Iranian and Israeli pavilions, hosted by the European Cultural Center at Palazzo Mora.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cArtists in Gaza are not only being bombed and starved,\u201d Saleh told TMR, \u201cthey are being sidelined and silenced by the Venice Biennale. All the while it is rolling out the red carpet for the Israeli government\u2019s exhibit in its own Pavilion.\u201d Saleh observed that out of 330 works chosen by biennale curator Adriano Pedrosa, none are from Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>As a counterpoint to this exclusion, in addition to 30 Palestinian works from 1990 until 2024 <em>Foreigners in Their Homeland<\/em> will feature 60 sketches by a single artist in Gaza, drawn during recent IDF bombing.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition features works by the late great Leila Shawa including her powerful 2004 \u201cDemocracy in Red\u201d as well as an original print of Mustafa al-Hallaj\u2019s 1990 Masonite etching, \u201cDeferring Revolution.\u201d It also includes an animated video about checkpoints in the West Bank by Palestinian architect\u00a0 Nisreen Zahda and a painting by Ahed Izheman depicting a couple posing for their wedding photo in front of the looming Separation Wall.<\/p>\n<p><em>Foreigners in Their Homeland<\/em>,\u00a0 says Saleh, \u201cis about the brutality of the occupation \u2014 and how it permeates all facets of Palestinian life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"wDYxhc\" lang=\"en-FR\" data-md=\"61\">\n<div class=\"LGOjhe\" role=\"heading\" data-attrid=\"wa:\/description\" aria-level=\"3\" data-hveid=\"CCQQAA\"><span class=\"ILfuVd\" lang=\"en\" style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><span class=\"hgKElc\">The 60th International Art Exhibition will take place from<b> April 20 to November 24, 2024<\/b>\u00a0(pre-opening on April 17, 18 and 19), curated by Adriano Pedrosa.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div
