She, named for light, was twenty-seven.<br \/>\nMy hunger for fresh language carries me<br \/>\ncloser to violent shores, gravel voices.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Once before Fajr I cracked a date pit between<br \/>\nmy teeth, tilted the sharp half into a lover\u2019s mouth.<br \/>\nI tested the crimson I was sure seethed beneath<br \/>\nhis, every man\u2019s, skin. <em>You\u2019re like a furnace<\/em>,<br \/>\nhe whispered, dry against my sweat-laced back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">It\u2019s true I dream of hands<br \/>\nhot around my throat, the finger marks<br \/>\nI saw fading grime-green on [\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 ]\u2019s.<br \/>\nNo one has blued me, but still I wake<br \/>\nafraid, keening until the complex dogs bark back.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">How to fathom it, my grandfather alive now<br \/>\nlonger than our new-bloom nation. \ufb58\ufe8e\u06a9 means <em>pure<\/em>.<br \/>\nLand of the Pious, pigless and pissed-upon. Partition<br \/>\na moment un-begun, a dirge without end.<br \/>\nI sing its songs. I marry its men. I pretend<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">not to hear Sarah\u2019s bewildered laugh.<br \/>\nHow does a barren tomb sound? Waiting<br \/>\nuntil she wasn\u2019t. I pretend to be honeycomb<br \/>\nsucked clean, scraped raw.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The sound of a barren tomb: waiting<br \/>\neach month for the inevitable wilt<br \/>\nof a cervix sucked clean, scraped raw.<br \/>\nHagar had it easy\u2014until she didn\u2019t\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">sprouting, spared the monthly inevitable wilt.<br \/>\nSarah\u2019s throat plumed right in God\u2019s face.<br \/>\nHagar had the easy job until she didn\u2019t.<br \/>\nBut enough. It\u2019s boring\u2014watching faith peel.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4>Sarai<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">A name is not unlike<br \/>\na sexed body. Like mine,<br \/>\nit carries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Is remembered most<br \/>\nfor what it fails<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">to yield.
