Gets upset only when lunch isn\u2019t<br \/>\nready on time.<br \/>\nSpeaks a little less each day and moves from one sentence to<br \/>\nanother<br \/>\nwithout argument, as if drifting between rooms in a house without corridors.<br \/>\nYet sometimes he asks questions like:<br \/>\n\u201cWhat did God have in mind when he made man?\u201d<br \/>\nA rhetorical question you don\u2019t need to answer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">He falls asleep as fast as a book that drops from his hand.<br \/>\nIt is said that the most ordinary among us is a written book<br \/>\nthat exists in heaven, a book so huge<br \/>\nthat human eyes cannot read it.<br \/>\nThat\u2019s where everything<br \/>\nis recorded\u2014what we\u2019ve done, said, thought, felt,<br \/>\neven what hasn\u2019t happened yet. Who could imagine<br \/>\nthat a human body\u2014some square centimeters<br \/>\nthat were once only a cell\u2014<br \/>\ncould contain so much space for history?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">He understands other people less, including his wife,<br \/>\nthe book he\u2019s lived with cover to cover<br \/>\nwritten in two different languages and placed on the shelf<br \/>\naccording to the index.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>SOMETHING BIGGER THAN US<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The Eskimos have numerous different words for \u201csnow\u201d:<br \/>\nthe freshly fallen, the stepped on, the aged,<br \/>\nthe piled up in heaps, the rotten one<br \/>\nleft over from the previous winter.<br \/>\nAs if nearsighted,<br \/>\nthey\u2019re able to distinguish different shades of white:<br \/>\nthe nothingness, the emptiness, the present of an eternity,<br \/>\nand the eternity of the present.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Where I come from,<br \/>\nwe have four different words for \u201cevening.\u201d<br \/>\nFunny, but the one that fits best<br \/>\nis borrowed from a foreign language<br \/>\nbrought over by invaders, not by spice merchants,<br \/>\nand it rhymes with \u201clilacs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Where I come from,<br \/>\nthere\u2019s only one word for \u201cgrief \u201d and for \u201cwater\u201d<br \/>\nand both take the form of the containers that hold them:<br \/>\neach to their own fate, each to their own grief.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The Greeks have four different words for \u201clove,\u201d<br \/>\nlike the four stakes of a tent<br \/>\nthat assure you a spot in this world<br \/>\nif not today, maybe tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">According to anthropologists,<br \/>\nuntil a century ago, my people<br \/>\nhad no word for \u201clove,\u201d<br \/>\nonly a clever, naive doubt:<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s something bigger than us, right?\u201d<br \/>\nA doubt performed with the rhetorical gesture of a king<br \/>\nwho asks questions and expects<br \/>\nanswers to arrive only in his
