In these excerpts from her memoir in verse, Abacus of Loss<\/em><\/a>, poet and translator Sholeh Wolp\u00e9 evokes a day in the cemetery with her parents and a decisive moment while in transit at the airport.<\/h5>\n

Sholeh Wolp\u00e9<\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

Practicing Absence<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

We\u2019re attending a funeral in the same cemetery where our
\nparents have bought their burial plots. After the service they insist
\nwe walk over and see. There\u2019s a bench<\/em>, says Daddy, and a shade
\n<\/em>tree. In case you want to come and visit. Often, I hope.<\/em><\/p>\n

She doesn\u2019t come often when we are flesh<\/em>, says Mama, why would
\nshe come when we\u2019re just bones? <\/em>She then rings an arm around
\nmine and we navigate the graves.<\/p>\n

Mama\u2019s knees buckle with every step.
\nShe, who always glided as if on rollerblades.<\/p>\n

Daddy walks ahead, careful not to step
\non the names of the dead.<\/p>\n

We goad our parents to lie down.
\nAnd to our surprise, they do.<\/p>\n

Even the sparrows suddenly fall silent<\/p>\n

as we lift up our phones to capture
\nour parents practicing their own absence.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

At The Airport<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sitting with three open books black with the meandering
\ncalligraphy of a \u201cterrorist language\u201d at an American airport
\nis a terrible idea.<\/p>\n

But five hours early, what\u2019s a girl to do but risk it, open what
\nshe must under the watchful eyes of TSA and cameras that
\nblink when a person of unknown dark curly-hair origin is
\nspotted with undecipherable texts, possibly manuals for mass
\ndestruction of something.<\/p>\n

A few people pass by, too casually perhaps, and peek at the
\nbooks, but in the end, it\u2019s a sweeper who soft-shoes his way
\ntowards me, a Latino Fred Astaire with fake bushy mustache.
\nHe runs his broom to and fro, moving dust closer and closer to
\nmy ridiculously high-heeled red shoes, then stops. He pretends
\nto notice me for the first time, puts his small chin on the stick of
\nhis broom, gathers his mouth as if around a cut lemon,
\nsquints, then asks in Spanish, \u00bfQue es esto? Greico?<\/em><\/p>\n

Good move, I think, so you no hablas ingl\u00e9s, amigo. I look up
\nand give him a sly smile. He parts his lips, slightly. His teeth are
\ncorn-yellow. A smoker for sure. But that mustache? It takes all my
\nstrength to not reach up and pull. To see if it comes off.<\/p>\n

I answer in Spanish, No,<\/em> this<\/em> isn\u2019t<\/em> Greek,<\/em> it\u2019s<\/em> Persian<\/em> poetry.<\/em><\/p>\n

He lifts his chin, says, \u00a1Bien! \u00a1Hablas Espa\u00f1ol! <\/em>He then bends over
\nthe book for a closer look. I say, this time in English, Poetry<\/em>, and
\npoint to the shape of the couplets. See?<\/em> I say, A<\/em> line<\/em> of<\/em> Persian
\n<\/em>poetry consists of<\/em> two hemistiches separated like this<\/em>. I point to the
\nblank space between separated texts. He ungathers his lips
\nfrom their concentrated pose, nods, mumbles something
\nabout how he hated memorizing poetry at school, then in
\nperfect accent-less English: Don\u2019t miss your flight<\/em>.<\/p>\n

With that, he turns on his heels and just as deliberately, soft-
\nshoes back, towards some place, over there, broom still in
\nhand, past a door that appears and disappears like an itch,
\nscratched.<\/p>\n
