{"id":27496,"date":"2023-07-24T08:17:46","date_gmt":"2023-07-24T06:17:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/?p=27496"},"modified":"2023-07-24T08:39:24","modified_gmt":"2023-07-24T06:39:24","slug":"jenins-freedom-theatre-survives-another-assault","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/jenins-freedom-theatre-survives-another-assault\/","title":{"rendered":"Jenin&#8217;s Freedom Theatre Survives Another Assault"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The theatre company launched by slain actor and filmmaker Juliano Mer-Khamis manages to survive yet another heavy Israeli assault on the Jenin Refugee Camp.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hadani Ditmars<\/span><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefreedomtheatre.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Freedom Theatre<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (TFT), headquartered in the northern West Bank\u2019s Jenin Refugee Camp, is nothing if not a crucible for the Palestinian experience. Up against grinding poverty, occupation, religious extremism, and, more recently, aerial bombardment from IDF during the July 2023 assault, the theatre miraculously survives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few days after the IDF occupied its offices and the ceiling of its old British Mandate-era building cracked from the impact of bombing, staff and supporters were busy cleaning up the rubble and making plans for a new season. After a show of solidarity by a wide range of Palestinian artists, theatre makers, and intellectuals from across the occupied territories who staged a \u201ccultural protest\u201d in the theatre\u2019s courtyard \u2014 a community gathering place \u2014 discussions were underway for a series of drama therapy workshops aimed at traumatized children (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/jenin-ocha-flash-update2-4-july-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five were killed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0during the IDF incursion) and health care workers (who were shot at by the IDF as they tried to reach the injured). At the time of the attack on the camp, TFT was planning a feminist theatre festival and in rehearsal for a play by Charles Mee called\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Love<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, based on\u00a0Aeschylus&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Suppliants<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about issues of gender politics, love, and domestic violence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many TFT staff, like the other 15,000 occupants of Jenin Refugee Camp, bore the brunt of the unrelenting 48-hour military campaign that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/unispal\/document\/jenin-ocha-flash-update2-4-july-2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed 12 people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, injured 143, and displaced hundreds of families. In fact, the drama of living in Jenin rivals the plots of many of the plays that TFT has performed since its inception in 2006. These range from a re-envisioned\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alice in Wonderland<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0about a girl who refuses to marry the man her family has chosen for her, to Athol Fugard\u2019s apartheid-era drama\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Island<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In the face of everyday events in Palestine, TFT productions transform into hyper-real meta-theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Staff and students killed, injured, arrested<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourteen-year-old Sadeel Naghniyeh, a young participant at the theatre and the niece of TFT\u2019s chief technician Adnan Torkoman, was killed by the IDF. Just two weeks later, Torkoman, who lives in a residential complex that abuts the theatre, was arrested and held for four days by the Israeli army. His home was also damaged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As many of TFT\u2019s staff and students live in Jenin Refugee Camp, some had to flee the camp as the invasion took place. According to a press release, \u201cSome of the team [members] were forced to stay in their homes and were used as home shields and others refused to leave at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These included Isra Awartani, TFT\u2019s accountant, who \u201chastily created a safe space within her home to shield her three daughters from harm,\u201d and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therevolutionspromise.com\/testimonies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rania Wasfi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a past member of the theatre who \u201cfrantically tried to reach her mother and sister after news that their house was bombed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ahmed Tobasi, the theatre\u2019s artistic director, \u201cfound himself face-to-face with an armored vehicle stationed right outside his house, its barrel aimed at his window.\u201d His twice-daily video\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zgSyCaPDzRw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">diaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0on his Facebook page became a riveting cinema verit\u00e9 during the 48-hour siege, when the camp was virtually closed to the outside world and journalists attempting coverage were\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifj.org\/media-centre\/news\/detail\/category\/middle-east-arab-world\/article\/palestine-journalists-targeted-by-israeli-forces-during-raid-in-jenin?fbclid=IwAR0jK5PqYuSyIIJmzFmUP0si5Px_oOgjebUPgd6G-Os-LKX2kFQ-bgFt4zU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">shot at by the IDF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(the same soldiers who\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/05\/11\/middleeast\/idf-apology-shireen-abu-akleh-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0renowned Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh last year while she was covering a raid on Jenin).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a July 9<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cEmergency Zoom\u201d call for the theatre\u2019s supporters that drew hundreds of participants from around the world, Tobasi said, \u201cIt was just like 2002\u201d \u2014 the so-called Battle of Jenin that\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2002\/sg2077.doc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">killed 52 Palestinians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2014 \u201conly they somehow managed to inflict more damage in two days than they did in two weeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe have many challenges,\u201d explained Tobasi, who spoke of high-tech military tactics and drones being used to attack the densely populated refugee camp. \u201cThe conservative culture, the religious people, the Israelis, the political situation, funding \u2014 but when we see this kind of support, it helps us to go on and to continue with Juliano\u2019s legacy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27517\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27517\" style=\"width: 1000px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-27517 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/the-freedom-theatre-on-july-6-2023.jpg\" alt=\"the freedom theatre on july 6 2023\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/the-freedom-theatre-on-july-6-2023.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/the-freedom-theatre-on-july-6-2023-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/the-freedom-theatre-on-july-6-2023-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/the-freedom-theatre-on-july-6-2023-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27517\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The freedom Theatre in Jenin on July 6, 2023 (courtesy Freedom Theatre).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Third Intifada will be a cultural one.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nThe legendary Israeli-Palestinian founder of the theatre, who is referred to by his first name by friends in Jenin, has become a kind of secular saint among his supporters. A martyr to the cause who famously said, \u201cThe Third Intifada will be a cultural one,\u201d Juliano Mer-Khamis founded the theatre in 2006 together with Zakaria Zubeidi, a former military leader of the Jenin al-Aqsa Martyrs&#8217; Brigades; Jonatan Stanczak, a Swedish-Israeli activist; and Dror Feiler, a Swedish-Israeli artist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2011, Mer-Khamis was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2011\/apr\/11\/juliano-mer-khamis-obituary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">murdered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in front of the theatre by a masked Palestinian gunman. Four months later, masked Israeli soldiers attacked TFT in the middle of the night, and a year later\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2012\/jul\/11\/west-bank-freedom-theatre-director-hunger-strike\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Israeli authorities arrested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> artistic director Nabil al-Raee and co-founder Zubeidi on various trumped-up charges, including terrorism and involvement in the murder of Mer-Khamis. The story of the actor, director, film maker, and activist was told in a recent piece of theatre produced by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therevolutionspromise.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TFT<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0based on actual interviews with Palestinian artists. But his tale is as much Greek tragedy as verbatim theatre.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Juliano was born to Arna Mer-Khamis, a Jewish former\u00a0combatant in the Palmach (a Mandate-era Zionist military organization) who became a Communist after participating in operations to drive Bedouin out of the Negev, and Saliba Khamis, a Palestinian Christian and one of the leaders of the\u00a0Israeli Communist Party\u00a0in the 1950s. Juliano himself was stationed in Jenin as a member of the IDF\u2019s Paratroopers Brigade. He soon became disenchanted with his role when he saw the violence and humiliation inflicted on a captive population. As he said in the 1991 film\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0101681\/plotsummary\/?ref_=tt_ov_pl\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Deadly Currents<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Juliao identified as a Jew in his youth because he was raised by a free-thinking Jewish mother, but when he joined the IDF he realized that, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ES0PWbqe6pM&amp;t=38s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this wasn\u2019t my mama \u2014 it was fascism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!\u201d He was eventually sent to prison for punching a commanding officer after refusing an order to frisk an elderly Palestinian man.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After his release he went to theatre school and spent a year in the Philippines taking magic mushrooms, later\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ES0PWbqe6pM&amp;t=38s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">declaring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI lost all my identities. I have a gift, you are not only consciously un-nationalized, you are inside yourself divided. Use it!\u201d\u00a0While his response to the First Intifada was to perform street theatre in Tel Aviv nude and covered in blood, his mother Arna started a children\u2019s center in Jenin Refugee Camp and asked her son to teach drama therapy.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27516\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27516\" style=\"width: 500px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27516\" src=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Juliano_Mer-Khamis-courtesy-Saif-Dahlah.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"653\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Juliano_Mer-Khamis-courtesy-Saif-Dahlah.jpg 500w, https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Juliano_Mer-Khamis-courtesy-Saif-Dahlah-230x300.jpg 230w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Juliano Mer-Khamis (courtesy Saif Dahlah).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the Second Intifada broke out, and two of his former students became suicide bombers \u2014 one after witnessing the death of a young girl killed by IDF bombing \u2014 he returned to Jenin a month after the 2002 Battle of Jenin began. Hosted by a former student who was the leader of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, he met future theatre co-founder Zakaria Zubeidi and later made a film about the experience called\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0408504\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arna\u2019s Children<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, released in 2004. Although he said in an Israeli radio interview in 2009 that, &#8220;I am 100% Palestinian and 100% Jewish,\u201d in reality he treaded on dangerous terrain, slipping between identities in Jenin and Tel Aviv.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to Israeli\/Palestinian issues, Jenin was also a hotbed of conflicting interests and loyalties to Fatah and Hamas, rife with rumors and realities about corruption and collaboration. Juliano\u2019s murder, which occurred shortly after he pulled the plug on a production of \u201cSpring Awakening\u201d that offended local socially conservative sensibilities, has still not been solved and both the Palestinian Authority and the Israeli government have been reluctant to provide answers. As he\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ES0PWbqe6pM&amp;t=38s\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">once famously said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cThey think that if you replace the Israeli occupation with the Arafat occupation, it\u2019s going to be better, and I say no, fight both of them!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Sieges, poetry, and international tours<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TFT\u2019s current artistic director, Ahmed Tobasi, has had no less of a dramatic life narrative. In fact his story, of going from armed resistance to acting and his journey as a refugee from the West Bank to Norway and back again, is the subject of TFT\u2019s production\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefreedomtheatre.org\/2018\/03\/ahmed-tobasi-takes-and-here-i-am-on-a-world-tour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here I Am<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The play is based on the famous verse by Mahmoud Darwish \u2014 \u201cI am from there. I am from here.\/I am not there and I am not here\/I have two names, which meet and part and I have two languages.\/I forget which of them I dream in.\u201d <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here I Am<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">written by <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldsite\/author\/hassanabdulrazzak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hassan Abdulrazzak<\/a> and directed by long-time TFT associate Zoe Lafferty, toured the UK as well as Jenin and the West Bank.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although TFT produces a variety of international plays, its strength lies in its portrayal of Palestinian reality. A compelling example is 2015\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zoelafferty.co.uk\/thesiege\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Siege<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0created by Raee and Lafferty, about the 39-day siege of Bethlehem\u2019s Church of the Nativity in 2002, which played out at the same time as the siege of Jenin. The drama moves back and forth between the historical event and the present, drawing from interviews with surviving combatants who were exiled in Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, as residents of Jenin recover from yet another Israeli siege, one recalls Darwish\u2019s words:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In the state of siege, time becomes space<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transfixed in its eternity<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the state of siege, space becomes time<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That has missed its yesterday and its tomorrow.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TFT draws on the many layers of Palestinian memory and trauma to produce poignant and powerful emotional truths as well as drama therapy for the residents of Jenin. But it is the theatre\u2019s international productions like\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here I Am<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Siege<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that serve to \u201chumanize the Palestinians,\u201d points out Gary M. English, an American theatre professor who was TFT\u2019s artistic director from 2012- 13. As he wrote in the 2020 book,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/anthempress.com\/theater-in-the-middle-east-hb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Theatre in the Middle East<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Narratives portraying Palestinians as human, complex, caring, deliberate, and thoughtful, or simply taking on the task of daily life roles, are often decried as propaganda. When it comes to any representation of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in particular, theatre that takes a humanistic and complex look at Palestinian resistance invokes accusations of anti-Semitism and regularly deemed dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interviewed at his home in Connecticut, English relates that TFT plays two key roles. One is that, \u201cIt provides children and youth of the camp a way to think about who they are in the world. In addition to a call for\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefreedomtheatre.org\/donate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">donations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, TFT is encouraging allies to program Palestinian plays and films, and to perform or create an event around their verbatim theatre work\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.therevolutionspromise.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Revolution\u2019s Promise<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0Created by TFT and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artistsonthefrontline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artists on The Frontline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the project is billed \u201ca collection of testimonies from artists across Palestine, celebrating cultural resistance and highlighting censorship and attacks on artists.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe are inviting friends, activists, and artists worldwide to join this collaboration by telling these stories in the community you live, work, or organize in,\u201d says TFT\u2019s website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paradoxically, the recent assault on Jenin Refugee Camp has brought home what Lafferty describes as \u201cJuliano\u2019s mission \u2014 to bring the story of Jenin camp to the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In spite of everything that has transpired, she says, \u201cTFT has absolutely triumphed in that mission.
