The demonstrations were initially led by women and now include people from all walks of life: schoolchildren, factory workers, truckers, drivers, even shopkeepers. <strong>A<\/strong>ccording to the Norway-based NGO, Iran Human Rights, at least <strong>458 people, including 63 children and 29 women, have been killed in the nationwide protests.<\/strong> IHR received a high volume of reported deaths, which it continues to investigate despite the security situation and internet disruptions in Iran. By its estimations, the actual number of people killed is believed to be far higher.<\/p>\n<p>At the time of writing, two protestors Majidreza Rahnavard and Mohsen Shekari, both 23, were the first protestors executed\u00a0 \u2014 by hanging. The young men were accused of <em>moharebeh<\/em>, \u201cwaging war against God.\u201d Other protestors have been sentenced to death for <em>efsad-fil-arz<\/em>, \u201ccorruption on earth.\u201d The Islamic Republic withholds the names of demonstrators who have been sentenced to death, and denies them access to a lawyer, which contravenes the country\u2019s own Shari\u2019a law for people facing the death penalty.<\/p>\n<p>Recently Javaid Rehman, special rapporteur on Situation of Human Rights in the Islamic Republic of Iran, told the U.N. that over 14,000 people have been arrested in Iran in the past six weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GSJs-hR6GqQ&amp;ab_channel=TopPersianMovies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201c<em>Zan<\/em>, <em>Zendegi<\/em>, <em>Azadi<\/em>\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>(woman, life and freedom, Persian) and in Kurdish, \u201c<em>Jin<\/em>, <em>Jian<\/em>, <em>Azadi,<\/em>\u201d were some of the first slogans chanted in the streets. Songs, hymns and anthems also bolstered the protests. Some have been sung in public to amplify hope and courage; others listened to in times of solitude and grief. Many of these songs have gone viral, and their writers, singers and rappers have not gone unnoticed by the Islamic regime. Figures from the House of Music (the Iranian Musicians\u2019 Union) show <strong>at least 21 musicians have been detained by the authorities<\/strong>, including the orchestra conductor <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MahmoudMirzaie?src=hashtag_click\">Mahmoud Mirzaie<\/a>, world-renowned classical percussionist <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NavidAfghah?src=hashtag_click\">Navid Afqah<\/a> and dissident rapper <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/toomaj-salehi-charges-1.6672801\">Toomaj Salehi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Zan Zendegi Azadi \u0632\u0646 \u0632\u0646\u062f\u06af\u06cc \u0622\u0632\u0627\u062f\u06cc\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/GSJs-hR6GqQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=LY_U5QfeQQc&amp;ab_channel=PirouzShamekh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cBaraye\u201d by Shervin Hajipour<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The most famous of the protest songs is \u201cBaraye \u2026\u201d by Shervin Hajipour. Its lyrics are a collage of trending protest tweets, demanding radical change in Iran, which all start with the word <em>baraye<\/em> (for\u2026 or because of \u2026, in Persian). The song became an instant hit with 40 million views in less than 48 hours after Hajipour\u2019s self-recorded video for the song appeared on his Instagram account on September 28. It is the uprising\u2019s unofficial anthem and visitors returning back from Iran to Britain said it was being power-played on car stereos long after it was taken down from the Instagram, following Hajipour\u2019s arrest by the authorities on September 29. This popular song has been performed by artists around the world, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qwPLwKgDUVU\">Coldplay, featuring Golshifteh Farahani<\/a>, the Iranian movie star in exile, during an October concert in Buenos Aires; Swedish singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TOHIHBK6DXQ\">Carola H\u00e4ggkvist<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EFWBmeidgow\">Rana Mansour<\/a> on <em>The Voice<\/em>, in Germany; and by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RjNZZ6AUk2w\">Azam Ali<\/a> and other Iranian singers in the diaspora.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Shervin - Baraye | \u0634\u0631\u0648\u06cc\u0646 - \u0628\u0631\u0627\u06cc\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BGesf7QcREk?start=2&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Jpi7d_uQ5Ec&amp;t=1s&amp;ab_channel=Toomaj\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cFaal\u201d by Toomaj Salehi<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His most recent song \u201cFaal\u201d (fortune telling) predicts what will happen after Iran changes. Shortly after its release in October, the rapper was arrested with two friends in Isfahan. A photograph published after his arrest showed him blindfolded. Afterwards, the regime released a video of the false confession Salehi was forced to give under duress \u2013 an often-repeated tactic of the Iranian government. Judging from his experience and others\u2019, the rapper\u2019s assessment of the Islamic Republic rings devastatingly true. \u201cWe live somewhere horrific,\u201d he once remarked, \u201cYou are dealing with a mafia that is ready to kill an entire nation \u2026 in order to keep its money, power and weapons.\u201d Like Majidreza Rahnavard and Mohsen, who were executed, Salehi has been changed with <em>moharebeh<\/em>. Now based in London, <strong>Hichkas<\/strong> wrote in \u201cInyekiam Vase\u201d (this one is for\u2026) a the thunderous, wrathful response to Shervin Hajipour\u2019s song \u201c<strong>Baraye.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Hichkas - Inyekiam Vase\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i_bLcFCdSIo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9b22Q_zoTMM&amp;ab_channel=Roody\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cZan\u201d by Roody<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Roody, 23, is a prominent, new generation, woman rapper from West Tehran. She describes herself a<strong><em>r<\/em><\/strong><em>apkon<\/em>, or \u201crap do-er\u201d in Persian. She has been rapping since she was 15. In a 2019 interview with Beehype\u2019s Ali Eshqi, she said that despite hip-hop\u2019s roots in African-American experience, the music localizes once it becomes part of another culture. \u201cHip-hop,\u201d she said, \u201cis an artistic global culture and movement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Unsurprisingly female Iranian rappers face more difficulties than women rappers in other parts of the world. In Iran, women rappers should not appear in videos. It is forbidden for women to sing let alone rap.<\/p>\n<p>With its increased song space for lyrics, rap is tailor-made for conscious, political rhymes. Roody\u2019s most recent single \u201cZan\u201d (woman) speaks of the struggle that the people, especially women, have with the authorities, and honors the children who have been killed. The song was written and recorded after the major fire at Tehran\u2019s notorious Evin prison, where political prisoners and arrested protesters are held in Tehran.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Roody - Zan\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9b22Q_zoTMM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y9Wd0tdM-rU&amp;ab_channel=MehdiYarrahi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSoroode Zan\u201d by Mehdi Yarahi<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance gave Mehdi Yarahi an award for best pop album of 2017. Less than a year later he was banned from performing and appearing on stage and television because he wore the uniform of workers arrested in 2017\u201318 labor protests in Khuzestan, and released the song and video for \u201cPare Sang\u201d (broken stone), which criticized the 1988 Iran-Iraq War. Mehdi Yarahi\u2019s \u201cSoroode Zan\u201d (woman\u2019s anthem) is one of several songs from the protests, which takes the form of a <em>soroode<\/em> or revolutionary anthem. This hopeful song, which praises the women\u2019s movement, was inspired by Mahsa Amini\u2019s death and released in the first weeks of the protests.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Soroode Zan (Woman&#039;s Anthem) - With English Translation | \u0633\u0631\u0648\u062f \u0632\u0646 - \u0645\u0647\u062f\u06cc \u06cc\u0631\u0627\u062d\u06cc\" width=\"750\" height=\"563\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/y9Wd0tdM-rU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n3ELEOeFjx8&amp;t=2s&amp;ab_channel=ATriumphOfMusic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cSoroode Sogand\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Translated as oath hymn, \u201cSoroode Sogand\u201d is also known by the title \u201cEverlasting Cry.\u201d Performed by students from the Culture and Arts Department of Tehran University, it was posted on November 17, 1401 \u2013 according to the Iranian calendar. This song is a version of another song, \u201cSogand Be Khon Hamoranam\u201d from 2008, whose singer and composer remains unknown. During the latest protests, a group of Iranian female singers living in the diaspora sang the song, which was arranged by <a href=\"https:\/\/paygan.net\/\">Behrooz Paygan<\/a>, in Toronto. The song commemorates the 2019\u201320 Bloody November. These protests initially started because of a 50\u2013200 per cent increase in fuel prices. They were violently suppressed after they led to calls to overthrow the government and the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The Islamic Republic shot and killed demonstrators by firing from rooftops, helicopters, and at close range with machine guns. To hide the scale of the tragedy, the government disposed of the bodies of the dead and warned families not to speak to the press or hold funerals. Considered a classic in revolutionary songs, many versions have been performed worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>Behin and Samin Bolouri are sisters who have been making music together since 2015. Their version in Persian has ties to Iran\u2019s 1970s socialist movement. The Bolouris have covered dozens of Iranian songs from the 1960s to the 1970s, considered the golden age of Persian pop\/indie music. Their performance of \u201cBella Ciao\u201d became popular during early on the protests.
