In this HEROINES<\/a> issue of the Markaz Review, it is only apt to turn to that ultimate heroine of Iranian poetry, a poet of great audacity and extraordinary talent, Forugh Farrokhzad.<\/p>\n

Forugh\u2019s poetry was the poetry of protest \u2014 protest through revelation \u2014 revelation of the taboo: the innermost world of women, their intimate secrets and desires, their sorrows, longings, aspirations and at times even their articulation through silence. Her expressions of physical and emotional intimacy, much lacking in Persian women\u2019s poetry up to that point, placed her at the center of controversy, even among the intellectuals of the time.<\/p>\n

Her call to eliminate the country\u2019s \u201ccancerous cells\u201d and \u201ccorruption\u2019s vermin\u201d resonates with Iranians today as they take to the streets calling for freedom. What better expression of what is happening in the Islamic Republic of Iran today than Forugh\u2019s precise words: \u201cthe cad hides his yellowness in the dark,\/ and the cockroach\/\u2026 ah when the cockroach harangues, \/why should I stop?<\/p>\n

Why should I stop, why?<\/p>\n

Birds have gone to seek their blue way.
\nThe horizon is horizontal,
\nmovement vertical– a gushing geyser.
\nBright stars spin as far as the eye can see.<\/p>\n

The Earth repeats itself in space, air tunnels
\nbecome connecting canals and day changes
\nto an entity so vast it cannot be stuffed
\ninto the narrow imaginations of the newspaper worms.<\/p>\n

Why should I stop?<\/p>\n

The path meanders among life\u2019s tiny veins
\nand the climate of the moon\u2019s womb will annihilate
\nthe cancerous cells, and in the chemical aura of after-dawn
\nthere will remain only voice\u2014
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0voice seeping into time.<\/p>\n

Why should I stop?
\nWhat is a swamp but a spawning ground
\nfor corruption\u2019s vermin?
\nSwelled corpses pen the morgue\u2019s thoughts,
\nthe cad hides his yellowness in the dark,
\nand the cockroach
\n\u2026 ah when the cockroach harangues,

Printer\u2019s lead letters line up in vain.
\nLead letters in league cannot salvage petty thoughts.
\nMy essence is of trees; breathing stale air depresses me.
\nA bird long dead counseled me to remember flight.<\/p>\n

Fusion creates the greatest force\u2014
\nfusion with the sun\u2019s luminescent soul,
\ncomprehension flooding with light.
\nWindmills eventually warp and rot.
\nWhy should I stop?
\nI hold to my breasts sheaves of unripe wheat
\nand give them milk.<\/p>\n

Voice, voice, only voice.
\nThe water\u2019s voice, its wish to flow,
\nthe starlight\u2019s voice pouring upon the earth\u2019s female form,
\nthe voice of the egg in the womb congealing into sense,
\nthe clotting together of love\u2019s minds.<\/p>\n

Voice, voice, voice, only voice remains.
\nIn a world of runts,
\nmeasurements orbit around zero.
\nWhy must I stop?<\/p>\n

The four elements alone rule me;
\nmy heart\u2019s charter cannot be drafted
\nby the provincial government of the blind.
\nWhat have I to do with the long feral howls
\nof the beasts\u2019 genitals?
\nWhat have I to do with the slow progress
\nof a maggot through flesh?<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the flowers\u2019 bloodstained history that has committed me to life,
\nthe flowers\u2019 bloodstained history, you hear?<\/p>\n
