While indisputable props go to Beyonc\u00e9, Lizzo, and Bad Bunny, NPR basically recapitulated the top of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/charts\/hot-100\/\">Billboard\u2019s Hot 100<\/a>. Neither NPR nor Billboard, however, fully capture the best of summer 2022 music, even if their focus was narrowed to dance music. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their \u201cbest of\u201d omitted massive swaths of dance music from other genres and regions, which is where TMR comes in.\u00a0 Because TMR goes where corporate, mainstream media stops short, a hot summer music round-up would be incomplete without giving props of MENA and diasporic proportions to <a href=\"https:\/\/beirumusic.com\/\">Bei Ru<\/a> and the aptly titled album, <a href=\"https:\/\/linktr.ee\/bei_ru\"><em>Diaspora Dreams<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> featuring the vocals of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kristamarina.com\/\">Krista Marina<\/a>, that dropped on 29 July.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the vast Armenian Diaspora, Bei Ru is Baruir Panossian, Armenian American DJ, singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist and producer, based in Los Angeles by way of Lebanon. And singer-songwriter and producer, Krista Marina is also Armenian American with roots in Lebanon and Jordan.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ose-youtube ose-uid-3c357f90d9d5894b6af2443baa667c03 ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:600px; height:550px; max-height:550px; max-width:100%; display:inline-block;\" data-embed-type=\"Youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" title=\"Noir (Official Video)\" width=\"600\" height=\"550\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AZadMUcXQ20?feature=oembed&color=red&rel=0&controls=1&start=&end=&fs=0&iv_load_policy=0&autoplay=0&mute=0&modestbranding=0&cc_load_policy=1&playsinline=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; encrypted-media;accelerometer;autoplay;clipboard-write;gyroscope;picture-in-picture clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\nWhether due to genocide, conquests, revolution, or migration, there\u2019s not one, typical \u201cArmenian.\u201d The beauty of such multi-generational displacement, to borrow from William Saroyan, is that no matter where an Armenian might be, in meeting another, together they will create a new Armenia. Exemplar of Saroyan\u2019s prediction is <em>Diaspora Dreams<\/em>, a must-add to this summer\u2019s playlist.<\/p>\n<p>The beauty of diaspora life, by its very nature, is a co-mingling of cultures and transcendence of borders. Though cultural fusion in music, food, and fashion is on trend, fusion also reflects the resiliency and innovation generated by change. As such, diasporan-made music can often achieve a level of savoir-faire that evades the purists. While not abandoning or replacing tradition, the diasporic musician is able to bring forward and recontextualize music from a particular place and time into the present moment.\u00a0 To this point, <em>Diaspora Dreams<\/em> fuses house, lounge, trip, and trance with decidedly Middle Eastern and Armenian rhythms and downbeats. Masterful use of reverb adds to a cool, lo-fi effect, especially on \u201cNoir.\u201d The song\u2019s subtle doum tek underpinning registers in the body before the mind or ear, making it danceable and listenable on repeat. Perfect for summer after dark, the rich versatility of Krista Marina\u2019s range and timbre brings a soulful, sultry groove to \u201cNoir,\u201d and an ethereal, chill-out quality to the album overall.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ose-youtube ose-uid-0a825e9b0c62d717e39ca2f23bc6668b ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:600px; height:550px; max-height:550px; max-width:100%; display:inline-block;\" data-embed-type=\"Youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" title=\"Bei Ru - How To Let Go Of Bad Vibes feat. Since then, Bei Ru has collaborated, mixed, and mashed sounds with other artists from a variety of genres, and composed for film and TV. Journalists make for bad fortune tellers, yet \u201cNoir\u201d may well be positioned to do for Bei Ru what \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zNhHhtJ1reM\">Lebanese Blonde<\/a>\u201d did for <a href=\"https:\/\/thieverycorporation.com\/\">Thievery Corporation<\/a> 20 years ago. In a matter of one song, Lebanese Blonde \u2014 the original version with Pam Bricker (peace unto her soul) on vocals \u2014 catapulted Thievery from niche to mainstream. International music as a genre made the actual leap into international arenas.
