{"id":7070,"date":"2022-02-15T10:40:19","date_gmt":"2022-02-15T08:40:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/?p=7070"},"modified":"2023-11-17T14:46:51","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T12:46:51","slug":"two-poems-by-sophia-armen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/two-poems-by-sophia-armen\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Poems by Sophia Armen"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Sophia Armen<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>We Want to Be Patti Smith and Robert Mapplethorpe, But We\u2019re Armenian<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>me and you lived downtown<br \/>\nin the jewelry district<br \/>\nwhere everyone is named<br \/>\nharout or hussein<\/p>\n<p>across from the place my parents were married<br \/>\nwoke up everyday, no mermaids<br \/>\ndressed in white and saw it<br \/>\ndressed in light<\/p>\n<p>on the third \ufb02oor<br \/>\nabove a piss alley<br \/>\nand the metro station<br \/>\nthat brought tunes until the AM<\/p>\n<p>we lived upstairs<br \/>\nwhere the soot fell from the ceiling<br \/>\nand the trash shoot clanked from all 22 \ufb02oors above<br \/>\nwhere the water \ufb02ooded the kitchen<br \/>\nand the balcony was<br \/>\na \ufb01re escape without the escape<br \/>\nwe don&#8217;t care if we die here<br \/>\nbecause we\u2019ve<br \/>\nnever felt more alive<\/p>\n<p>i would beg you to go see the latino festival in pershing<br \/>\nand you would beg me to come back to bed<br \/>\nand we would both win<br \/>\nbecause i would come back to bed<\/p>\n<p>buried beneath these tiger-eyed blankets<br \/>\nand in the kitchen up against where the drawer doesn\u2019t extend<br \/>\nwe were two young kids just playing pretend<br \/>\ntelling each other who the other is<\/p>\n<p>but we don\u2019t run<br \/>\nwe\u2019re from here<br \/>\nand dad has worked three blocks away for<br \/>\ntwenty-\ufb01ve years<br \/>\nand grandma down the street too<br \/>\nan LA breed and everybody<br \/>\nwe know everybody and why the hell does<br \/>\nevery body know we are with<br \/>\neach other\u2019s body<\/p>\n<p>me a short black dress<br \/>\nwith my curls \ufb01st-\ufb01ghting my bobby pins<br \/>\nyour black-grease covered elbows<br \/>\nfrom a long day at the shop<br \/>\nyou collapse on our ugly blue couch<br \/>\nand i collapse on top of you<\/p>\n<p>our mothers are horri\ufb01ed when we bring them<br \/>\nthere\u2019s no such thing as experiments of life<br \/>\nfor our kin\u2019s kind<br \/>\nwho believe they want nothing but to be free<\/p>\n<p>but really all they are<br \/>\nis everything they\u2019ve always been<\/p>\n<p>family<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nsoorj and silva<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>daughter of armenia<br \/>\ndaughter of iran<br \/>\nyou can\u2019t have known what you have give me<\/p>\n<p>o\ufb00erings of co\ufb00ee<br \/>\no\ufb00erings of warm bread<br \/>\nyou can\u2019t have known what you have given me<\/p>\n<p>use 50% of heart<br \/>\nYou said<br \/>\nin love,<br \/>\n50% of head<\/p>\n<p>You can&#8217;t have known what you\u2019ve given me<br \/>\nin the city that hums<\/p>\n<p>daughter of paklava<br \/>\nbrings halt a daughter\u2019s roam<br \/>\nin my arabica-black eyes<br \/>\nyou have known<\/p>\n<p>surrounded i\u2019m alone<\/p>\n<p>one scoop of powder<br \/>\none of cardamom<br \/>\nyou can&#8217;t have known what you have given me<\/p>\n<p>you have given me home<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>L.A.
