Glassy<br \/>\nComes to claim me back<br \/>\nBetween solitude and waves, the horizon<br \/>\nDisappearing before my eyes<br \/>\nWith each new tide, I<br \/>\nGather sounds, smells, and gusts \u2014<br \/>\nWith every shiver \u2014 I<br \/>\nSift through them, I<br \/>\nStitch them together<br \/>\nTo trace back my old places<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">But for now, alone I\u2019ll keep<br \/>\nWatching the stars like a sailor<br \/>\nRoaming the piers<br \/>\nLooking about the beach<br \/>\nUnquenched longing grows in scope<br \/>\nAnd remains etched in my mind<br \/>\nWrapping me in its full embrace<br \/>\nWearing a smile. Though sadly,<br \/>\nSpurred by longing, I<br \/>\nWork my way through words<br \/>\nMending my way across<br \/>\nThe crashing of waves<br \/>\nI stand alone on the beach<br \/>\nIn search of lost places<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Life on the Hyphen<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The blue sky, boundless<br \/>\nUnpacks a new day<br \/>\nThat feels magical.<\/p>\n<p>With rapt attention \u2026<br \/>\nI look at an eagle hovering high above, rapt<\/p>\n<p>Under the boundless blue sky<br \/>\nIn the stillness of the day<br \/>\nWe sit in a circle. Echoes bouncing.<br \/>\nA beat came into my heart. Each beat, pure,<\/p>\n<p>Strong enough to conjure up my ancestors\u2019 memory.<br \/>\nHeavy on my mind &#8212; the separation<\/p>\n<p>Bodies undulate to the rhythm of the drum<br \/>\nEchoing through the plain<br \/>\nThe drumbeat, in unison,<br \/>\nA heartbeat. Speechless hearts.<\/p>\n<p>If I were to close my eyes, is it possible that I<br \/>\nCommit this moment to eternity?<\/p>\n<p>Ovid said this would happen<br \/>\nOnly poetry can heal from<br \/>\nThe alienation of distance.<br \/>\nAnd I let myself be carried away<\/p>\n<p>What a heartfelt relief!<br \/>\nWhat more can one ask for?<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\"><strong>At Home<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">Through the drapes<br \/>\nI contemplate the snowflakes falling<br \/>\nDance as they catch the light<br \/>\nProviding me relief<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">In the moment,<br \/>\nLost for words,<br \/>\nI marvel at the sight<br \/>\nLingering on the memory of all I have lost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">Staring at the world outside speechless<br \/>\nMesmerized by the ensuing silence.<br \/>\nYet my estrangement remains, even increases<br \/>\nIn much the same way as if I have come full circle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">No matter how peaceful the snow is<br \/>\nThere\u2019s nothing more tragic than<br \/>\nWhen it blankets any previous traces<br \/>\nAnd the sense of distance is magnified.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">Alone with my thoughts<br \/>\nThrough fragments of fleeting<br \/>\nWeary moments. The clock delicately ticks<br \/>\nAnd time seems to come to a standstill.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">The fire crackles,<br \/>\nFlickers, breaks into sparks<br \/>\nAwakens within me<br \/>\nThe joy bequeathed to me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">Swayed by the interminable pauses. There I realized<br \/>\nOn the threshold of the very moment,<br \/>\nMinutes and seconds huddling together<br \/>\nFor warmth. Yearning to keep\u00a0memory alive.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">I caught my reflection so unguarded<br \/>\nChasing a dream. Hope following.<br \/>\nHow quiet my world is, I thought.<br \/>\nOne must subdue exile or otherwise be stifled by it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Allegory of My First Independence Day<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On such a summer day<br \/>\na white cloud makes its way<br \/>\nthrough the blue sky<\/p>\n<p>On a summer day<br \/>\nI allowed my attention to drift away<\/p>\n<p>A child on his father\u2019s shoulders<br \/>\nwaving a pair of flags<\/p>\n<p>Red, white, and blue curtains flutter in the windows<br \/>\nadorned picnic tables<\/p>\n<p>The smell of fireworks wafts through the air<br \/>\nin the mixed scent of the festivities<\/p>\n<p>Nature continues to blossom<br \/>\ndahlias and marigold bloom in the yards<\/p>\n<p>The wind chimes gently jingle<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: var(--global--color-primary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">it is a moment to be reckoned with<\/span><\/p>\n<p>People continue to drift away<br \/>\nand I am listening to The Boss\u2019s American Land<\/p>\n<p>It is this moment<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: var(--global--color-primary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">happiness and sadness that so affected me<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The thought that fills me with such mixed feelings<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: var(--global--color-primary); font-size: var(--global--font-size-base);\">is sufficient to remind me<\/span><\/p>\n<p>of the condition of being relocated<br \/>\nyet, our hope will endure
