Illuminate my world with<br \/>\nthoughts that can dismantle walls?<\/p>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 80px;\" \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">W.H. Auden\u2019s \u201cPartition\u201d mocks the lawyer<br \/>\nwho cut India like cheese<br \/>\ninto India and Pakistan:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">It is as if the Raj itself got dysentery,<br \/>\nhurriedly drew a line on a map, half-half,<br \/>\nrushed to the loo,<br \/>\nthen retreated to England\u2014<br \/>\nfor fear of getting shot.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 80px;\" \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">No leader could calm an ocean of bodies<br \/>\nrushing to safety,<br \/>\nstem the rivers of blood,<br \/>\n<em>raththa aaru<\/em>, as amma recalls.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 80px;\" \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Half a century after Partition no one in my family says,<br \/>\n<em>I want to go to Pakistan for a vacation. <\/em>A wedge<br \/>\nin the collective psyche plunges so deep, we still wade in it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I watch with fascination a documentary about an activist<br \/>\nwho gathers school children from both countries;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">they mingle like streams.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The children echo, <em>I want peace. No seema, No sirhud<\/em>.<br \/>\nBut as they flow toward peace,<br \/>\nwounds of the border break afresh.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 80px;\" \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The language of rulers<br \/>\nand the language of the rabble<br \/>\nelide over details.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 80px;\" \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Walls have secret openings, hidden<br \/>\npassages. Consider castle<br \/>\nwalls and forts.<\/p>\n<hr style=\"padding-left: 80px;\" \/>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">What are walls made of? Pieces of earth<br \/>\nspirit, not dead matter. We throw rocks at walls<br \/>\nthat restrict us, diminish our future.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Do walls have eyes and ears? Do walls talk?<br \/>\nWhat do they say? Do they shout, flex their muscles?<br \/>\nDo walls erode, lose stones, crumble?<br \/>\nCan we hear where their veneer is weakest?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes and yes.<br \/>\nJust keep making dents.
