Deena Mohamed<\/a>‘s approach to fiction is always rooted in place and perspective. The Cairo-based comics artist is the creator of\u00a0Qahera<\/a>,\u00a0<\/i>an online bilingual comic strip that follows the titular superheroine in her efforts to combat misogyny and sexual harassment across the city. The first part of her epic\u00a0Shubeik\u00a0Lubeik\u00a0<\/a><\/i>was published in 2018; the project creates a world in which wishes are not only real but a natural resource that\u00a0is of course extracted and commodified. The\u00a0book, which I had the pleasure of\u00a0reviewing for TMR<\/a>\u00a0following\u00a0its\u00a0release in an\u00a0English\u00a0self-translation in 2023, explores the journey and effects of three first-class wishes, all obtained from Shokry’s\u00a0kiosk.<\/h5>\n
