He was<br \/>\n<em>I&#8217;ll tell you when you&#8217;re older. <\/em>He was winding smoke,<br \/>\na secret name. That fucking Turk.<br \/>\nHe was foreign word, distant country.<br \/>\nI gave myself up to her hands which also<br \/>\nfathered; they shaped me into flinch.<br \/>\nInto hesitant crouch, expectant bruise.<br \/>\nInto locked door, CIA black site-<br \/>\nmy body unknown and denied to any<br \/>\nbut the basest men. I said beat my father<br \/>\ninto me please, but he couldn&#8217;t be found.<br \/>\nAnd when he was, I wished he remained<br \/>\nlost. He blamed himself for the men I want.<br \/>\nA father can negate any need he thinks<br \/>\nthey are the sum of all desires he thinks<br \/>\nabsence has a gender. Sometimes<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I thank God that I was born inside an American<br \/>\n-made tank. Sometimes I weep within<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">the beast. My uncle works on the railroads<br \/>\nand goes home to his nuclear family loathing<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">my queerness from afar. He and I tend<br \/>\nour silence, a beautiful child<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">until it speaks.Another uncle is a guard<br \/>\nwith two ex-wives and a secret love<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">of comic books. Tragedy made him the head<br \/>\nof his family too soon. <em>Don&#8217;t <\/em><em>weep for your dad<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">he said, <em>weep for me. <\/em>&#8216;You didn&#8217;t know him<br \/>\nlike I did.&#8217; I have a third uncle, a mechanic<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">who visits his home in Lebanon every year<br \/>\n&amp; now I must admit English has failed me.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I should say kholo, my mother&#8217;s brother.<br \/>\nI should say umja, my father&#8217;s brother<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">so you know which branch of the tree to cut-or<br \/>\ncherish. My uncles are doused in industry, good sons<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">of the State. They get on with what needs<br \/>\ngetting on. Language is their least favorite<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">daughter. They use their mouths for breath<br \/>\nand do their best to forget the world<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">outside. I think they love where they come<br \/>\nfrom but in truth, I have never heard them<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">say so, except to mutter they do not want<br \/>\nto pay taxes in two countries come on<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">one is killing them already &amp;<br \/>\nisn&#8217;t that enough<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Omar
