The speaker of Majda Gama\u2019s\u00a0<em>The Call of Paradise<\/em> is a \u201c[b]ride of many cities, daughtered by the East &amp; mothered by the West,\u201d with poems placed in Beirut and punk L.A., Bab Makkah, the Al-Ain Oasis, and \u201cin the red, backhoed dirt of Virginia,\u201d the Red Sea and \u201cthe summer \/ Shoreline in America,\u201d visible and invisible, her hair both black and neon pink, occupying the edge but \u201cunable to submerge.\u201d Even the poems\u2019 forms, at times, feature parenthetical weavings, and ghazal-like shifts and dualities. The result of this fluid positionality is nuanced, hushed witness, oud-scented ritual, and deep artfulness. The speaker may not arrive in paradise, but at the termination of this beautiful sequence of poems, she hears its call.\u00a0<strong>\u2014Diane Seuss<\/strong>, Contest Judge, and author
