Birds. Maybe<br \/>\na character flaw some find charming.<br \/>\nThere will be pain, of course,<br \/>\nand laughter. Some small<br \/>\nsweet gesture, like the way<br \/>\nshe used to hold my face<br \/>\nin the tender cups of her palms<br \/>\nbefore kissing me, moments<br \/>\nthat gather into something<br \/>\none might call a life. This<br \/>\nstory we tell ourselves<br \/>\nas loved ones cross over<br \/>\none by one.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 160px;\">We are learning<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">how to care for the dead, each<br \/>\nin our own way. So, too, the living.<br \/>\nWe lean our heads back and listen<br \/>\nto music translated from the air<br \/>\nas memory draws our fingers<br \/>\nthrough a loved one\u2019s hair<br \/>\nbefore brushing the stone<br \/>\nto reveal the pooling shadows<br \/>\nof the chisel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 160px;\">It\u2019s something<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">like prayer, I think, the way others might<br \/>\ntalk to god within the vaulted spaces<br \/>\nof the body, one\u2019s voice spoken<br \/>\ninto the long corridors swept clean<br \/>\nof shadow, there by the opened windows<br \/>\nwhere the birds might one day<br \/>\nfly in at dawn, singing.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>from <em>The Dead Peasant&#8217;s Handbook<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Bodies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The bodies lie along the shoulder of the road.<br \/>\nThe bodies lie in an ambulance, a truck bed, a stretcher.<br \/>\nThe bodies are strobed in flaring lights, color of fire, color of night.<br \/>\nThe bodies rest within the fuselage of a plane at 36,000 feet.<br \/>\nThe bodies contemplate silence as they wait in the morgue.<br \/>\nThe bodies are moved from room to room, one hour to the next.<br \/>\nThe bodies are bathed by strangers and by those who love them.<br \/>\nThey are numbered and recorded with signatures and stamps.<br \/>\nThey are forgotten by all save those who love them.<br \/>\nThey are left to the fields, to the green embrace of earth.<br \/>\nThey are given sunlight and storm, a shadow of wings descending.<br \/>\nThey are given to rivers, to fire, to ash on the wind-driven rain.<br \/>\nThey are carried on the shoulders of stone-faced men.<br \/>\nThey are serenaded with tears, with the instruments of suffering.<br \/>\nThey are eulogized in great halls and within the confines of loneliness.<br \/>\nThey are lowered into the ground and into the vaults of memory.<br \/>\nThey are disassembled and disbursed by the steady labor of time.<br \/>\nThey learn more about compassion as they are lifted in someone\u2019s arms.<br \/>\nThey learn more about the sacred as voices call around them.<br \/>\nThey learn more about grieving as their eyes are sewn shut.<br \/>\nThe bodies are moved from room to room, one hour to the next.<br \/>\nThe bodies are numbered and recorded with signatures and stamps.<br \/>\nThe bodies are bathed by strangers and by those who love them.<br \/>\nThe bodies contemplate silence as they await the mortician, and<br \/>\nthey are forgotten by all save those who loved them.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>from<em> The Wild Delight of Wild Things<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Auditorium Cave<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 240px;\">Bhimbetka, India<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Archeologists often describe vast waves of time<br \/>\nas occupation layers, or horizons. In this particular cave,<br \/>\nwe have to peel away layers of historical sediment<br \/>\nuntil we arrive at the Upper Acheulean Horizon, or<br \/>\neven deeper into the Lower Chopping Tool Horizon.<br \/>\nOnce we\u2019ve traveled far enough, the excavation reveals<br \/>\ncupules\u2014rounded indentations in the interior of the cave.<br \/>\nThey are rock markings pounded into crystallized quartzite.<br \/>\nImagine what it would take to create any one of them.<br \/>\nThe sheer number of blows. A hammerstone held in the palm<br \/>\nand pounded against the wall of the cave, over and over,<br \/>\nwith precision. And while some might call it art,<br \/>\nor a message to the gods of thunder to pour any rain<br \/>\nthey might hold within the ever-changing bodies they cloud<br \/>\nacross the sky, I think it might have been the pounding<br \/>\nof one\u2019s sorrow into the wall of the mountain they lived in.<br \/>\nA hammerstone swung against all that is resolute.<br \/>\nEach report sounding itself deep into the mountain.<br \/>\nPercussion petroglyphs. Forged within the cold<br \/>\nand indifferent. The stone altered by it.<br \/>\nMade to embrace its own silence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">As it often happens. We recognize absence by what holds it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">And how could this not be considered art? Painful<br \/>\nthough it may have been to create. Pounded<br \/>\ninto the mountain 290,000 to 700,000 years ago.<br \/>\nThe sound of it ringing throughout the cave, even still.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 240px; text-align: left;\">\u2022<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I\u2019m reminded of our home in College Park.<br \/>\nBuilt in 1949, I doubt it will see the year 2100.<br \/>\nAt some point, it\u2019ll be torn down in a matter of hours,<br \/>\nits footprint cast over in concrete for a another<br \/>\nhousing generations to come. None of them<br \/>\nwill have the slightest clue that we lived here.<br \/>\nThat we even existed. In their busy lives,<br \/>\nthey likely won\u2019t pause to consider what once was.<br \/>\nThe two of us dancing in the kitchen. Spinning vinyl<br \/>\nuntil dawn. Crying in each other\u2019s arms. Laughing.<br \/>\nThat floating in the dark we did in bed, drifting<br \/>\nhour by hour through wavelengths of being.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">And these new people, those who come after\u2014<br \/>\nI imagine them in bed at 2 a.m., in a room<br \/>\na few stories above our own. One of them listens,<br \/>\nbreathless for a time, then gently wakes the other,<br \/>\nas you used to do sometimes, leaning in<br \/>\nclose, whispering\u2014<em>Do you hear
