In his second book of poems, Almallah seeks a language that captures the afterlives of the mother tongue. This collection blurs the borders between languages, between the living and the dead, between presence and absence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ose-vimeo ose-uid-3778db7637db450fbac3818049ac49c7 ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:600px; height:550px; max-height:550px; max-width:100%; display:inline-block;\" data-embed-type=\"Vimeo\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allowFullScreen=\"true\" title=\"Poet Ahmad Almallah, Poetry Markaz, November 2023.\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/882836961?dnt=0&amp;app_id=122963&title=0&color=00ADEF&byline=0&portrait=0&autoplay=0&loop=0&autopause=0\" width=\"600\" height=\"550\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"encrypted-media;accelerometer;autoplay;clipboard-write;gyroscope;picture-in-picture fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Ahmad Almallah<\/h4>\n<p><strong>ARMS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">the law is clear, an eye<br \/>\nfor an eye, an ear for an ear:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">arms hold hands, hands<br \/>\nhold arms: and the stone<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">is raised in the air, then<br \/>\nhere and here: bones<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">break in images:<br \/>\nthere there, calm yourself<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">down, and down again:<br \/>\nhunted, now you can<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">haunt: the shatterings<br \/>\nunderneath purple flesh<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">the blood pulsing from vein to<br \/>\nvein, and the spills that stain<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>BORDER WISDOM<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">the world is not as bad as our<br \/>\nneighbors<br \/>\nmade it to be that day\u2014<br \/>\nwe\u2019ve seen worse days\u2014<br \/>\nand how beautiful<br \/>\nthey were, these days living<br \/>\nstrife: how we loved everything about<br \/>\nnot having to go to school:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">I won\u2019t describe the past for you,<br \/>\nI tell you I got held<br \/>\nat borders, I tell you I am<br \/>\nused to it, and what? What is this record<br \/>\nyou play over and over: don\u2019t get<br \/>\nused to it, you shouldn\u2019t<br \/>\nit\u2019s sad\u2014I bow in recognition:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">and after the long journey<br \/>\nfrom border to border, wanting<br \/>\nonly piece after piece of these walls around me to start<br \/>\nbreaking,<br \/>\nwhat does <em>not <\/em>getting used to it do for me?<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>SPRING, AN INTRUDER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">the flowers:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 almost<br \/>\ndone with themselves\u2014<br \/>\ngreen slowly taking<br \/>\nover, and passing<br \/>\nthe usual block, one street<br \/>\naway:<br \/>\nthe rust eating<br \/>\nwindow frames, chairs eating rust<br \/>\nby the door<br \/>\nand the wood<br \/>\nblackening,<br \/>\nmold\u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">inside is out:<br \/>\neverything we know<br \/>\nevery bite we eat<br \/>\nbegins<br \/>\nto consume
