The recipient of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citedelarchitecture.fr\/en\/event\/global-award-sustainable-architecture-2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 Global Award for Sustainable Architecture<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Khammash has much to offer a climate-chaos-stricken planet through his projects such as the Wild Jordan Center and the Royal Academy for Nature Conservation, among many others. Majzoub, himself an architect and editor-in -chief of Dongola\u2019s Limited Editions, borrows from Khammash\u2019s early writings on Jordanian rural dwellings, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/Village-Architecture-Jordan-Paperback-Khammash\/dp\/0936819014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes on Village Architecture in Jordan<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to craft the semi-eponymous title, which places \u201cformation\u201d at the center of Khammash\u2019s architectural theory and practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29485\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29485\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/dongola.com\/shop\/series\/notes-on-formation-ammar-khammash\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-29485\" src=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/ammar-khammash-notes-on-formation-cover-the-markaz-review.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"476\" height=\"570\" srcset=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/ammar-khammash-notes-on-formation-cover-the-markaz-review.jpg 476w, https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/ammar-khammash-notes-on-formation-cover-the-markaz-review-251x300.jpg 251w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Notes on Formation<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dongola.com\/shop\/series\/das-01-notes-on-formation-ammar-khammash2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dongola<\/a>, Beirut.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of advocating for a particular style, Majzoub\u2019s focus is on the ways and means in which buildings have come into existence in the Arab world. And while process is prioritized over finished product, Khammash\u2019s completed designs and structures are intrinsic to this discourse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The region\u2019s architecture is necessarily interdisciplinary and intersectional. Even the most contemporary of landscapes and cityscapes are in contact and communication with ancient history and heritage. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buildings here serve not just current needs but are long-term alterations with measurable impacts on the landscape and history. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A theme quickly emerges, indicating that for any architectural endeavor to be successful, the climate and terrain, societal and economic systems, and natural and spiritual worlds are essential considerations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discussions on formation are inevitably about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">information<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, form, and function. Khammash, however, first defers to nature as his mentor and point of reference. Formation is not a linear calculation. Larger contexts and the elements within generate a type of call-and-response that requires information gathering across disciplines to gain a more holistic vision of what\u2019s possible, and more importantly beneficial.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trained in architecture and ethnoarchaeology, Khammash also looks to the earth and social sciences to assess how harmony among a structure, the land upon which it\u2019s built, and those who use it may be best achieved. One such example involves hi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s contribution to research on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rheum palaestinum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (desert rhubarb) and the plant\u2019s self-irrigating system. Utilizing three-dimensional modeling software, Khammash\u2019s work helped to prove the rhubarb\u2019s ability to capture and condense water from the air and then channel it into the root system. For builders in the desert on an increasingly overheating planet, rife with both droughts and floods, self-irrigating systems like the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhem palaestinum\u2019s<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are invaluable to discussions on sustainable development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Majzoub writes that Khammash resists labels, both for himself and his works. Early in his career, Khammash made a judicious choice to keep his architectural undertakings separate from his artwork. Perhaps due to his experience as an inhabitant of the places in which he works, he insists on being \u201cvery careful not to cross the line \u2026 Architecture is problem-solving. Art is problem-making.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conversation between Majzoub and Khammash suggests the use of \u201cdesign thinking strategies.\u201d Design thinking, inspired by societal and ecological needs, requires keen observation and an understanding of lived experiences, which in some cases inevitably challenges norms. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/architecture-humanrights.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Centre for Architecture and Human Rights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CAHR) contends that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is exactly what comprehensive design and development should do. According to CAHR, development-induced displacement is as culpable as conflict and climate change in forcing people from their homes, and therefore recommends a rights-based approach to building.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Khammash\u2019s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> habit of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taking<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his clients\u2019 personal experiences, concerns, and needs into account before embarking on projects could brand him as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design thinking strategist and rights-based designer \u2014 even if he eschews those labels.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Whether Khammash is consciously following CAHR directives or simply his own sensibilities, the Jordanian architect looks at the impacts of construction \u201cin terms of social justice and labor\u201d before committing to a project.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When working on heritage conservation projects in traditional villages, he consults and employs locals. Reminiscent of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freire.org\/paulo-freire\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paulo Freire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> whose groundbreaking, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pedagogy of the Oppressed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, began with rural communities in Brazil, Khammash appears to share Freire\u2019s belief that everyone has the potential to be both teacher and learner. Blending high and low technologies, the original Byzantine construction provided foundational support for his renovations. As Majzoub explains, this method of architecture functions as a continuum, bringing the past into the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During Khammash\u2019s restorations at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.archnet.org\/sites\/1231\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pella Rest House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Tabqat Al Fahal, workers were instructed to build \u201cin the way their grandfathers did \u2026 to combat \u2018fake heritage,\u2019 construction [that was] meant to lure tourists into remote villages while destroying those villages \u2026 and ignoring their lineage.\u201d Restoring ancient sites by traditional means prevents the obliteration of local knowledge. The integration of tradition and modernity actually serves multiple ends \u2014 the decision to use bamboo in the construction of Pella\u2019s vaults, for instance, became an investment in the local economy through the purchase of bamboo from nearby villages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another past-to-future project is depicted in a photograph from the 1980s that shows a man plastering a structure with his bare hands and mud. Khammash\u2019s emphasis on construction that abides within international human rights standards and social, environmental, and labor justice is apparent, and the tribute is well deserved.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admittedly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, upon first reading, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes on Formation\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">s<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">portrayal of Khammash is overtly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laudatory. For good reason it turns out, as a closer analysis of Khammash\u2019s preoccupations with the formation and evolution of the nature, tribes, and creations of the Arab world eventually unfold like a roadmap to solutions. Still, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Majzoub\u2019s description of Khammash\u2019s process as \u201ceffortless,\u201d even for the award-winning architect, seems overstated. More likely, after years of immersion in the field \u2014 and imaginably, degrees of dogged trial and error \u2014 Khammash has developed his own rhythm and flow, casting an outer appearance of ease.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bearing in mind that Majzoub himself is an artist, architect, and writer \u2014 in addition to serving as the book\u2019s editor \u2014 his <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">florid writing disproves assumptions that an architectural text should be dry or technical. Lavish in philosophical quotes, exquisite imagery, and rare archival materials, Majzoub\u2019s rendering does justice to Khammash\u2019s pioneering and poetic spirit, and treats readers to the art of Arab storytelling. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With art direction by the award-winning Iranian graphic designer Reza Abidini, the coffee table-stylized book exemplifies formation. It is a meticulous presentation on construction, functionality, and beauty with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">glossary afterword that confirms the text\u2019s educational and aesthetic, value.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notes on Formation <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asserts that architecture in the Arab world is ultimately called to raise questions, bend rules, and forge stronger connections between the past and present. By positioning architecture as a disciplinary force for change in the region, it provides, according to Majzoub, \u201ca much-needed public pedagogy.\u201d Creating new municipal spaces while simultaneously preserving cultural heritage sites opens possibilities for critical conversations on collaboration, cultural transmission, and human relationships with the environment, changing climates, and societies within and beyond the Middle East, North Africa, and Southwest Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*Ammar Khammash: Notes on Formation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, edited by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Raafat Majzoub,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is part of Dongola\u2019s biannual book series.
