Oh yes.<br \/>\nShe met the great mystics, a child prodigy<br \/>\nwho sat in a circle of students and read minds,<br \/>\nquick as a magician flipping cards<br \/>\n\u2014King of hearts, Jack of clubs\u2014<br \/>\nthe right one every time.<br \/>\nImagine<br \/>\nthe side effects<br \/>\nof such a superpower.<br \/>\nShe married an actor in New York birthed five children<br \/>\nthen escaped his philandering in a VW bus<br \/>\nwest to California,<br \/>\nreading every mind she met, the highway a cacophony<br \/>\nof lust, loss, and jeremiad, her golden locks flying<br \/>\nout the window,<br \/>\nfor she was stunning. Oh yes.<br \/>\nShe bought a sacred mountain for she was also rich.<br \/>\nWhat we Americans call a double whammy.<br \/>\nHer husband begged forgiveness then stole<br \/>\nher secret knowledge<br \/>\nin late night conversation.<br \/>\nArmed with esoteric pillow talk,<br \/>\nit was he who started the cult. Oh yes.<br \/>\nAnd it was the kind of cult you\u2019re thinking of.<br \/>\nA fine actor,<br \/>\nhe played both<br \/>\nKing of hearts and Jack of clubs (sex and violence<br \/>\nhis lesson<br \/>\nfrom those post-coital chats).<br \/>\nApparently, love<br \/>\nblinds even the great mystics, so it took years before<br \/>\nshe saw<br \/>\nthe man behind the curtain.<br \/>\nShe had to storm<br \/>\nher own husband\u2019s compound.<br \/>\nWhen men drew guns at the gates,<br \/>\nher mythical golden hair proved<br \/>\nquite bulletproof.<br \/>\nIt is said<br \/>\nshe simply led the women away, offering to teach them.<br \/>\nA single rule: no fucking around. The men followed,<br \/>\nas men do.<br \/>\nAnd so my people came to be, spawning<br \/>\nto five hundred,<br \/>\nand no one fucked around, a feat<br \/>\nmore miraculous than parting a seawater inlet.<br \/>\nBut there were other rules. Oh yes.<br \/>\nAnd five hundred minds she could not silence,<br \/>\nlusting, losing, and perpetually editing jeremiads.<br \/>\nShe liked to compare herself to Moses, we her people,<br \/>\nthough she made it clear<br \/>\nwe were more lost than chosen. I ponder those tablets.<br \/>\nWere there ten,<br \/>\nor did the old prophet shuffle them like a magician?<br \/>\nDid his people check the handwriting? We certainly didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Electing Exile<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Hung over from reminiscing, Morphine still pumping through the stereo,<br \/>\nwe head to The Terrible Caf\u00e9. The eggs run,<br \/>\nfly-shit speckles the walls, and the waitress<br \/>\nwants to poison us for making her work.<br \/>\n<em>Who would ever come back here?<br \/>\n<\/em>she growls,<br \/>\nflicking her order pad out like a switchblade.<br \/>\nShe is famous for this, and my brother loves it, slurping his raw egg<br \/>\nlike a sacramental soup.
