It is about the landscape at Nirox Sculpture Park and its environs \u2014 simultaneously wild and tamed.<\/p>\n<p><em>Red <\/em>is equally about India and the world \u2014 about the borderless land, skies and oceans that connect us, and much more. It is about the secrets of dolomite and \u201cmy intimate skies,\u201d about the community of artists (present and absent) engaging through intricate works of ekphrasis. It is about the politics of color, language, body \u2014 about the complex neural transmissions that link each cell and sub-cell.<\/p>\n<p><em>Red<\/em>\u00a0extends and builds upon Sen\u2019s last book,\u00a0<em>Anthropocene<\/em>\u00a0\u2014 pushing the debate wider and deeper. It<em>\u00a0<\/em>is intellectually stringent, tightly wrought,\u00a0amniotic,\u00a0visceral, raw \u2014 yet poised, subtle, choral, and always elegantly crafted \u2014 a<em>\u00a0tour de force.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Four poems from <\/em>Red<em> by Sudeep Sen:<\/em><\/p>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Before the Beginning<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>for Richard Forbes<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Before you start grinding, shaping them into your own<br \/>\nnarratives, you arrange the colony of history-soaked stones<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">in no particular pattern. But I see a coded striated matrix \u2014<br \/>\nmapping an architecture of shapes, weights, hues.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Lying side by side, with no seeming purpose or quest \u2014<br \/>\nluminous silver specks, flake off jagged stones\u2019 surfaces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Even before you begin, there is poetry in these assemblages \u2014<br \/>\nstories embedded, hidden from the human eye, buried deep<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">in this old continent\u2019s fossils and bones. Today, they are alive<br \/>\nagain \u2014 new stories sculpted by fresh hands, eyes, minds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Stone-art and stone-etched text, slow-sing simultaneously \u2014<br \/>\na song for our ancestors, from before the beginning.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Toucan\u2019s Beak<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>for R F<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">In Kalahari, red is quartzite \u2014<br \/>\nsometimes, even dolomite.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Red is a toucan\u2019s fossil beak,<br \/>\na clawed deranged head<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">on a decapitated pedestal \u2014<br \/>\na cleaved log, bleeding?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Red is a carved skull \u2014<br \/>\nhypothalamus hollowed out,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">its spinal apex, a perfect hole \u2014<br \/>\ntunnel sucking everything in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">A vulva\u2019s cocoon \u2014 where<br \/>\npassion and pain meet \u2014<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">waiting for an elusive epiphany,<br \/>\ncosmic timelines away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">A balloon, a red meat slab<br \/>\nscored in white-fat striations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Or is it an ordinary tomato<br \/>\nin shopping aisle\u2019s ordinary?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px;\">Defiant, statuesque \u2014 beak red.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Memory: Head<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>for R F<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">My memory is a decapitated head\u00a0\u2014<br \/>\nin its slow beheading, lies my mortality.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Propped on a\u00a0blanched, wood pedestal\u00a0\u2014<br \/>\nit is a silent exhibit, whispering words.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I hear its muted murmur,\u00a0quietly pellucid.<br \/>\nI pin my gaze on this floating visage,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">as transparent-limbed osteo-fossils mill<br \/>\naround a rock-strewn gallery, searching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Vesicle-like, the brain bleeds pink-white\u00a0\u2014<br \/>\nstone hues of the Namibian desert.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Weather\u2019s mood and time cast their imprint<br \/>\non the craft\u2019s grafting. Even chain-saws,<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">grinders,\u00a0buffers, polishers, cannot predict<br \/>\nits outcome \u2014 its shape, its sculpted intent.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4 style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Cranial Red, Bone Red<\/h4>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>for R F<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">A ritual act. You place a section<br \/>\nof my ancestral skeleton on your head \u2014<br \/>\na quartzite cranial from a desert quarry<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">brought here from another country<br \/>\nfor me, a temporary sojourner<br \/>\nfrom another faraway country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Your stone is now ground, carved \u2014<br \/>\nI have etched invisible text on it,<br \/>\npolished my blanched bone to red.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I have changed the rock\u2019s light-pink<br \/>\nto my imagination\u2019s rouge-red \u2014<br \/>\nmatching the autumnal hue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Such are acts of transformation<br \/>\nin pre-destined friendships \u2014 intense,<br \/>\nshort-spanned \u2014 lives shared over<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">simple meals, walks, work, silence \u2014<br \/>\nchats, chores, conversation.<br \/>\nIn this primordial landscape, lives<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">slow-churn inside out, and back in.<br \/>\nThe southern stars, a constant witness<br \/>\nto our heart\u2019s
