born 1987) is a\u00a0<a title=\"Bedoon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bedoon\">Bedoon<\/a> writer, translator and literary scholar, born in\u00a0<a title=\"Kuwait\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kuwait\">Kuwait<\/a> to a stateless family, and this is a theme in her literary work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>Mona Kareem<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ose-vimeo ose-uid-e5b8a1b41e33466d73b63c04ec20db4a ose-embedpress-responsive\" style=\"width:600px; what if we could fasten peace<br \/>\nto the psyche of the executioner?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">What<br \/>\nof autumn<br \/>\nwhich will shred the suits of trees?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Cities Dying Every Day<\/h4>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">The roads are cavernous, ravaged by night<br \/>\nand the drunkards\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">I will not fold these maps;<br \/>\nit might dent my country\u2019s nose, prompting a raid of popular pockets for emergency plastic surgery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Another blood cell treads<br \/>\nalong my artery\u2019s narrow bridge\u2014 will the Disease Police intercept it?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Spring lies in my left brain, but what of autumn?<br \/>\nIt is possible it has divorced me, after inhabiting my entire life?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Inside every tent<br \/>\nis a child who emerges<br \/>\nout of its mother\u2019s desert and into another desert and then another\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Breathe,<br \/>\nleave the task of lung excavation to us. Breathe,<br \/>\nlet Narcissus depart your soul.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Tons of dust shroud our veins,<br \/>\nbut it can\u2019t compare to the dust that shrouds our smiles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Many cities die every day;<br \/>\nI myself died<br \/>\nwhen Sumer decided to surrender the throne.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">For the millionth time, Asia dons a coat of wars\u2014<br \/>\nas our lives transform into aging droplets.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px;\"><em>This poem was previously published in Modern Poetry in Translation.
