Shortlisted for the Derek Walcott Prize for Poetry, <em>Words are the Worst<\/em> has received some interesting reviews:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Lindner&#8217;s poetry cuts into the quotidian mise en sc\u00e8ne to lay bare illuminating juxtapositions across time and space. The poems in\u00a0<em>Words are the Worst<\/em>, awash in reflections and flotsam, illuminated by sea air, tease out meaning and motive from the everyday. Fleeting pleasures \u2013 a picnic, juicy apple, train ride, stride into the surf \u2013 dissolve in a moment. People getting changed between<br \/>\nthe low hedges by the barbed<br \/>\nwire round the dunes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">Playing cards drop on an outspread towel, the picnic<br \/>\nunder cloth in a wicker basket, sand heaped<br \/>\nover a bottle from the distillery where<br \/>\none of us has worked that day. Like<br \/>\neveryone else we run to the sea<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">and back again, tap out the sand from our shoes on the path,<br \/>\nembrace what was left unsaid in every conversation<br \/>\nwhen we say goodbye and feel inconsolable<br \/>\nin a streetcar as the driver announces<br \/>\nthe stops to his only passenger.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong>Untitled<\/p>\n<p><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">The garden lies between the road and the window<br \/>\nI saw through my dream by standing up in it<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">and still you shrug your shoulders<br \/>\namidst what\u2019s embracing you<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\" style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">that cartwheel and that brick path<br \/>\nthe chair which just stays put<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><em>how quietly streetcar seven to hoboken<\/em><br \/>\n<em>circles round the \/>\na wave breaks across a step<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">a ship is pulling on its chains<br \/>\nbulging out its hull<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">a driver opens the door of the moving car<br \/>\nand spits the betelnut onto the receding ground<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">a rolling cigarette sprays a circle of sparks<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">leaves patter against the passing carriage<br \/>\non the metro a man\u2019s still wearing his helmet<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">there\u2019s the rain putting out the fire<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">there\u2019s a dog guarding two sheep<br \/>\nand trotting up and down the field<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">walk down a stairway<\/p>\n<p
