I don\u2019t know<br \/>\nhow many test strips he needed to get the exposure right<br \/>\nor what it took him to learn how to turn<br \/>\na white swan black,<br \/>\nwanting to prove to his skeptical daughter<br \/>\nthey honk and busk in real waters, just outside<br \/>\nthe darkrooms of the Eastern Bloc.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong>The Fortuneteller<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\"><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">She stole the calling as a girl through a peephole<br \/>\ninto the healer\u2019s hut, then practiced on Florica,<br \/>\nthe cow with eyes like mine. Technique came later,<br \/>\nin a psych ward where, stunned by this unhinged<br \/>\nstenographer\u2019s knack for decoding her sisters\u2019<br \/>\nnocturnal gibberish, the director, a former patient,<br \/>\ndiagnosed her as prescient and, over pots of Turkish coffee,<br \/>\ntransferred techniques for which he, spirit-deaf, had no use.<br \/>\nSoon her one-room flat replaced the town\u2019s confessional,<br \/>\nits doorbell a 24\/7 hope dispenser.<br \/>\n<em>Folk want someone to know their troubles so bad, <\/em>she\u2019d mutter,<br \/>\n<em>they\u2019re ready to trade their shoes for a bit of listening.<br \/>\n<\/em>I grew unashamed of hearing, accustomed<br \/>\nto the blueblack flesh of midnight callers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 80px;\">This winter, same age as when she bartered<br \/>\nher brokenness, I hold the raddled deck.<br \/>\nWe pass the dusk of my forty-sixth birthday<br \/>\nalone, she and I, in a chapel aglow with the agony<br \/>\nof the damned and angels alarmingly pokerfaced.<br \/>\nMy galoshes, damp with transatlantic sweat,<br \/>\ncling to the ice-clad floor. Just this one time,<br \/>\nI promise myself as I shuffle the cards<br \/>\non her cold chest, and only to see<br \/>\nif the cobbler will be there to resole her
