{"id":10191,"date":"2022-09-15T15:40:37","date_gmt":"2022-09-15T13:40:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/?p=10191"},"modified":"2025-09-04T15:13:20","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T13:13:20","slug":"why-berlin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/why-berlin\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Berlin?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In recent years, with the flow of refugees from West Asia and Africa streaming toward Europe, many have struggled to find acceptance and asylum in the UK, Germany, and several Nordic countries, but one city stands out as having become a preferred destination among Arab and other Middle Eastern immigrants, and that is BERLIN.<\/p>\n<p>TMR\u2019s 24<sup>th<\/sup> issue is devoted to Berlin from the viewpoint of its SWANA immigrants and refugees, in particular artists and writers, activists and educators from Afghanistan, Iran, Syria, Egypt, Algeria, Palestine and other countries south and west of the Mediterranean. Is Berlin the \u201cnew Damascus\u201d or \u201cnew Cairo\u201d as some have called it? This population had the precedent of a large Turkish migration; as a result, are Germans in Berlin more receptive to and accepting of Muslim immigrants?<\/p>\n<p>Much of what we do at The Markaz Review is work with\u00a0writers and artists\u00a0who are moving or nomadic, who leave one country to start over in another, sometimes by choice, often of necessity. While some travel back and forth, many can\u2019t go home again. Whether you define yourself as merely a traveler, a nomad or a displaced person seeking refuge, BERLIN now offers many of the comforts of home, in a liberal society that accepts all strangers.<\/p>\n<p>Our guest editor for BERLIN is the German Egyptian film scholar and documentarian, <strong>Viola Shafik<\/strong>, who off and on has spent more than 20 years in Berlin, between her peripatetic existence that takes her to many world capitals. Shafik profiles artists <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/two-women-artists-dialogue-with-berlin-and-the-biennale\/\">Jihan El-Tahiri and Myriam El Haik<\/a> in the Berlin Biennale, and reviews matters of colonialism and restitution in her essay <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/my-berlin-triptych-on-museums-and-restitution\/\">My Berlin Triptych: On Museums and Restitution<\/a>. She also interviews <strong>Ziad Kalthoum<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/ziad-kalthoum-trajectory-of-a-syrian-filmmaker\/\">Trajectory of a Syrian Filmmaker<\/a> and profiles Palestinian photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/photographer-mohamed-badarne-palestine-and-his-u48-project\/\">Mohamed Badarne<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at just a few of Berlin\u2019s many Middle Eastern artists, this issue includes Berlin-based Jordanian artist and curator <strong>Ala Younis<\/strong>, who interviews Iraqi artist <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/on-ali-yasss-die-flut-the-flood\/\">Ali Yass<\/a> on his new work, while <strong>Noushin Afzali<\/strong> profiles multimedia artist <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/shirin-mohammad-portrait-of-an-artist-between-berlin-tehran\/\">Shirin Mohammad<\/a>, who glides back and forth between Berlin, Bremen and Tehran; and <strong>Melissa Chemam<\/strong> profiles contemporary Algerian-French artist <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/kader-attia-berlin-biennales-curator\/\">Kader Attia<\/a> as he discusses his role with the Berlin Biennale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Iskandar Abdalla<\/strong> reviews <strong>Mohammed Shawky Hassan<\/strong>\u2019s new film, an ode to <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/mohammad-shawky-hassans-ode-to-queer-love-in-berlin\/\">queer love<\/a>, and <strong>Necati S\u00f6nmez<\/strong>, a Berlin film critic and curator, reviews the new music documentary from German-Turkish director <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/cem-kaya-on-the-sound-of-turkey-in-germany\/\">Cem Kaya<\/a> on immigrant Turkish music in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/berlin-gastronomical-a-feast-of-flavors\/\">Berlin Gastronomical<\/a>, author and literature professor <strong>Randa Aboubakr<\/strong>, who travels back and forth from Cairo to Berlin, explores the city&#8217;s Arab food offerings, while <strong>Mohamed Radwan<\/strong> writes about his experience running <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/kairo-koshary-berlins-egyptian-food-truck\/\">Kairo Koshary<\/a>, Berlin\u2019s Egyptian food truck.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/the-intruders-and-the-city\/\">The Intruders and the City<\/a>,<strong> Rasha Abbas<\/strong>, a Syrian writer who ventures into the surreal, examines her conflicted relationship with Berlin, in a translation from <strong>Katharine Halls<\/strong>. Palestinian novelist <strong>Shada Mustafa<\/strong>, meanwhile, turns in a short story entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/paranoid-in-berlin-a-short-story-by-shada-mustafa\/\">&#8220;Paranoid in Berlin,<\/a>&#8221; and <strong>Ahmed Awadalla<\/strong> writes about love in Berlin, in his short story &#8220;<strong>Another German<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And this issue\u2019s centerpiece from Egyptian writer <strong>Ahmed Awny<\/strong>, &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/what-are-you-doing-in-berlin-a-short-story-by-ahmed-awny\/\">What Are You Doing in Berlin?&#8221;<\/a> divigates between fiction and reality in his decentering short story.<\/p>\n<p>Cultural historian <strong>Diana Abbani<\/strong> meditates on the SWANA music scene in Berlin, in a piece entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/exile-music-hope-nostalgia-among-berlins-arab-immigrants\/\">Exile, Music, Hope &amp; Nostalgia Among Berlin\u2019s Arab Immigrants<\/a>. Also delving into Berlin history, <strong>Ahmed Farouk<\/strong>, the Arabic translator of G\u00fcnter Grass, W. G. Sebald and Rosa Luxemburg, among others, struggles with <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/translating-walter-benjamin-on-berlin-a-german-arabic-journey\/\">Translating Walter Benjamin on Berlin, a German-Arabic Journey<\/a>. And film curator and scholar <strong>Irit Neidhardt<\/strong> searches for clues to the Berlin disappearance of gramophone tycoon Michel Baida, in <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/the-mystery-of-tycoon-michel-baida-in-old-arab-berlin\/\">The Mystery of Tycoon Michel Baida in Old Arab Berlin<\/a>. Finally, Palestinian writer and journalist <strong>Abir Kopty<\/strong> in an <a href=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/unapologetic-palestinians-reactionary-germans\/\">opinion piece<\/a> argues that German guilt is being used to silence Palestinians and others who protest on their behalf.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Berlin Who\u2019s Who<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But for as many stories as we include in this special BERLIN issue (20), there are thousands more that remain to be discovered. Among those we hope to write about in future issues of The Markaz Review are:<\/p>\n<p>The eclectic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jabaliaou\/?hl=fr\">Muhammad Jabali<\/a>, originally from Taybeh (Palestine), a writer and social entrepreneur who studied law at Tel Aviv University. He was a cofounder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haaretz.com\/israel-news\/culture\/2016-02-08\/ty-article-magazine\/.premium\/a-bar-beyond-coexistence\/0000017f-e155-d568-ad7f-f37f6b800000\">Anna Loulou<\/a> in Jaffa, and he cofounded <a href=\"https:\/\/alberlin.com\/\">Al.Berlin<\/a>, which over the past few years has become a mainstay for Arab Berlin, which also attracts Berliners interested in the Middle East and Arab arts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10195\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10195\" style=\"width: 539px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/alberlin.com\/al-festival-2022\/festival-artists\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10195\" src=\"https:\/\/themarkaz.org\/oldmarkaz\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Oum-Hals-Performing-on-14th-October-in-Festsaal-Kreuzberg-Berlin-in-Framework-of-AL-Festival-2022-by-AL-Berlin-Web-Version-Image.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"539\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oum Hals, a 7-act play, performing October 14 in the Festsaal Kreuzberg Berlin organized by AL-Berlin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Al.Berlin is producing its 3<sup>rd<\/sup> annual arts festival in Kreuzberg on October 14, 2022, which \u201cwill transform the immersive space of Festsaal Kreuzberg into an all-day celebration of West Asian and North African contemporary music and art.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/alberlin.com\/al-festival-2022\/festival-artists\/\">More info<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jabali is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, poet, DJ and an internet wiz. He posts his art on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jabaliaou\/?hl=fr\">Instagram<\/a> page, and you can find some of his writing here.<\/p>\n<p>Another Berlin mover and shaker is <a href=\"https:\/\/middle-east-union.de\/en\/event\/writing-the-arab-jew\/\">Georges Khalil<\/a> is the Academic Coordinator of the Berlin-based Forum Transregionale Studien and of its research program Europe in the Middle East\u2014The Middle East in Europe (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eume-berlin.de\/startseite.html\">EUME<\/a>), that seeks to rethink key concepts and premises that link and divide Europe and the Middle East.\u00a0He co-edited <em>Di\/Visions<\/em>, <em>Kultur und Politik des Nahen Ostens<\/em> (2009), <em>Islamic Art and the Museum<\/em>, <em>Approaches to Art and Archeology of the Muslim World in the Twenty-First Century<\/em> (2012) and <em>Commitment and Beyond: Reflections on\/of the Political in Arabic Literature since the 1940s<\/em> (2015). He recently coordinated a fascinating conversation with author-scholar (and TMR editorial board member) Ella Shohat, on \u201cWriting the Arab-Jew: Reflections on Displacement and Middle Eastern Diasporas\u201d (watch <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XW5XPYFFBoM&amp;ab_channel=Parataxedigital\">here<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Others who TMR hopes to write about going forward are novelist <strong>Muhammad Rabie<\/strong>, co-owner with Fadi Abdel Nour of the <strong>Khan al Janub<\/strong> Arabic bookstore, and so many more.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">\u2014<strong>Jordan
